Thank you for the kind words! The floor was our big splurge. We designed it and Heritage Tile/Subway Mosaics made it for us. We also have a wonderful contractor who did an amazing job of laying the tile out. Our backsplash is satin white subway tile from Heritage Tile as well. It should pull some of the texture from the soapstone and warmer tones out of the floor. It may be boring by some standards but we love the way its turning out.

Whatever you spent to splurge on that floor tile is completely worth it. It strikes just the right balance of past and current and sets the tone for the whole from. Great choice!

What is your impression so far of how easy it is to keep the floors looking clean? I have a bunch of hex floors like that pinned -- white background, plus some vintage border/pattern design mixed in -- and I love the way it looks, but I wondered if they'd look dirty all the time.

kelleg69 - it's suppose to be functional by the end of the weekend and "finished" in a couple of weeks. We're doing a few things to the porch as well. Long term we're considering building a bench and making a table for the far end of the kitchen where the laundry is but we want to live in the space for a while first.

Jillius - So far I think it will be very easy to live with. The tile and grout are both sealed and we used a charcoal grout. My initial impression is they shouldn't need much more than a broom and steam mop to keep them clean. We have black and white ceramic hex from American Olean in our bathroom which seems to be a little fussier. Its a bright/ice white so it shows dirt easier and the edges are rounded so the grout lines are a little deeper and trap dirt easier. The tile in the kitchen has very square rectified edges so the grout lines aren't as deep. I full expect this tile to wear and patina over time, much like our soapstone or the original wood floors in the rest of the house. It should look great for many years to come and outlast the glazed ceramic tile in the bathroom.

I was really pleased with the American Olean tile until we bought this tile. There is a huge difference in the look and quality but you also pay for it. As far as mass market tile goes Daltile is probably going to offer the most historically accurate tile and the widest variety of colors (wish I had done more homework before the bathroom was renovated). Unfortunately none of the big tile companies offer much in the way of unique mosaics unless you want to spend a ton of time popping tile out and making your own. Heritage Tile has been absolutely wonderful to work with and provides significantly faster and better service than their competitors. We worked with Susan who has very helpful. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

Historian - I've been following your thread. I'm really interested to see how your kitchen turns out. We've tried to use as much of the space as efficiently as possible without making it seem crowded. Our contractor suggested using an out swing door for our exterior door which was a great idea and really gave us a lot more freedom in how to use the space. Unfortunately moving the doorway was beyond cost prohibitive. We'll also have two large pull outs over the fridge and two toe kick drawers as well. I know we'll have to use a step ladder to get to the upper part of the cabinets but thats okay. There will also be smaller full size washer and dryer at the far end of the kitchen under an oak counter with more storage and a little counter space above.

zmith - It is wall to wall hex tile but the majority of the tile under the cabinets are plain white field tile. We did this to try and save a little money.

The door is hinged and swings to the right into the dining room. We considered a sliding door but would have had to used a narrower door and given up counter space. As nice as they can be it it would have opened a huge can of worms and just wasn't worth it. When we bought the house there was a 30x80in solid wood swinging door but during demo we discovered it was originally framed for a 36x82in door. The wider door and glass have been great for opening the space up. There will be a marble threshold when complete.

The door came out of an unknown downtown office building and has all of its original hardware, unfortunately the key for it is long gone.

Our cabinets are 100% made by our contractor and pained in a booth by his painter. They're solid wood with dovetail drawers. We had initially planned on using IKEA with custom doors but the sizes they offer wouldn't have worked without a substantial amount of hacking or wasted space.

LOVE that door! I'm wanting to find an old door with glass to go from the kitchen to the laundry area. So much character!

Hey, would a locksmith be able to take out the insert part where the key goes and make you a new set of keys and then put that insert back? I know it would be expensive, because locksmithing is a dying art (in my opinion) but it's something to consider.

Thank you! We briefly considered getting a key made but it was much more than it was worth to us. The door separates the kitchen from the dining room.

My father is helping us make a table out of the old lath for the breakfast nook. We will need to laminate all the subsections together, sand, sand again, make an edge detail, seal the wood, and put legs on it but this should give an idea of the final product.

Hot plates made from the same material. The wood is absolutely beautiful once it's finished.

Oh! Drooling now. Simply drooling. That is incredibly gorgeous. Now I want counters like that. They are better looking than the expensive Boos ones. I think I'm going to start driving around town looking for old houses condemned houses to see if I can steal the lathe.

Funk if you have the time and patience it would definitely be worth it. After you prep each piece they are about 1/4-3/8in thick. It took about 300 pieces to make a 30x60in table top. Depending on where you live it's probably going to be heart pine, cedar, or fur all of which are beautiful. It's more time consuming to save it since you can't just go at a wall with a sledge but it is really a shame so much of it just gets thrown out. Maybe you can work something out where you can have the wood for free if you remove it from a home.
