What to do with small bulb offshoots

I was given a very small amaryllis bulb a couple of years ago... I potted it up and it has been growing ever since... I recently noticed some small bulbs growing around it so I rip them off and repotted them just around the rim of the pot they each had very healthy looking roots and green shoots.... Should I have left them attached to the main bulb? The original bulb was very tiny when I got it and is now the size of a medium egg
