Redesigning Living Room

I want to give my living room a new look replacing the furniture and anything else that would improve the appearance. I thought about replacing the couch and large chair with a sectional sofa and also replacing the entertainment center with a TV stand that would allow to mount a TV and open up the living room.

Open to any and all suggestions including furniture type, colors, etc. Thanks much!

Here are some suggestions:
1. Lighten up the ceiling with an opaque stain so wood grain is still visible. Leave beams exposed.
2. Replace ceiling fan with a drum shade fixture with light shield.
3. Add patterned area rug with green wall color and lighter background.
3. Go with more tailored sofa with open base. Mid color range.
4. Wood arm accent chairs.
5. Dark round ottoman for contrast.
6. I would go with a light wood/white media cabinet that is more narrow than your existing one. It protrudes too far into the room.
7. Add sheer, light colored drapery panel.
8. Light wood end tables with beefier green lamps with light colored shades.

Is the ceiling and floor staying the same? If you love the wall color then consider adding a rug with the same color in a multicolored design. I feel you might have too many brown furnishings in the room and the art arrangement over couch isn't ideal. Just a thought.

The wood in the ceiling is more of a medium cedar color while the hardwoods of the floor are much lighter. I like the wall color overall and agree that I have too much brown. Do you think I should go with a lighter color for the coffee table/end table/tv stand or black?

I'd probably start with finding a rug you love and going from there. Probably lighter furniture though. Can you post a pic facing the couch and another facing the tv wall?

Love the ceiling. Although I'm usually not a fan of painting the wood. Nancy's suggestion seems to brighten the space a whole lot.

I like her window treatment suggestion.

Seems like you may need a fan in the room. Maybe you can replace it with something a bit more stylish.

I like your wall frames. I wouldn't change that.

How would you describe your style? For a tv console, I like what IKEA has to offer (not sure if it's something up your alley). I would go with a white console that has open legs (giving an illusion of more open space).

This is a great room. I want to work in it and on it. Please no sectional. It will limit you forever. A sofa and chairs are much more versatile. For sure get rid of the hulking entertainment center in favor of a console. For a lighter look, make sure all your furniture has legs.

For color, how about starting with the art and letting your color palette develop from that? (Because a room without art is like a library without books.)

Thanks for all the feedback - it is very helpful. A couple of additional pictures were requested and it may also help to give other ideas. As you can see, it's not an open modern great room, but the kitchen is somewhat open to the living room with a breakfast bar. Let me know if you have additional questions or ideas

I actually like your current sofa. It could look really nice with a rug and a few updated pillows. The chair seems too bulky for the space.

Yea, I am not opposed to keeping the sofa and I agree the chair is too large. I know the feedback was not to do a sectional, but do you think a sofa with a chaise lounge is too much? I like the idea of going with either lighter colored tables or expresso or black. I know I have way too much medium, rich wood colored items right now.

As for describing my style, I want to maintain the character of the room. It has a nice cabin feel, but it obviously needs to be a little more modern and colorful

Oh man, that set is a steal! The rug is a bit too small, not sure about matching tables, but even if you just use the sofa and coffee table, it's a deal.

One bit of advice: sectionals are the cause of many dilemmas on Houzz, so before you take your friend up on this deal, measure measure measure and even tape the footprint of that sectional on the floor to see if and how it fits in your space.

They are a light blue/gray. From the image, the colors would go well, but I also understand the feedback that my existing couch may be nicer with the wooden legs

I personally love couches with a chaise. I didn't discover them until someone suggested I get it when I posted my living room as a design dilemma. A chaise could provide seating from the other side too. It's a nice transitional space when you're hosting a party, it's comfy to relax after a long day of work, and it may fill the space better. Have you measured it? If it fits, I'd get it.
