Painting Interior Cedar

We have 2 walls in our great room that have rough cedar on them. I'd like to paint/stain/white wash them a gray to soften up the look. Any suggestionson products/methods?? I saw a verathane weather gray-any experience with it?? I'll attach some looks I like
