If this was a project I designed for one of my clients I would bring the backsplash over to the end of the wood counter -- sometimes I hold this back a 1/2" or so. I know you didn't ask about this next bit, but if this was my client's kitchen, I would not allow the 1/4" counter height difference to remain. Match it or miss it by a couple of inches is fine, I think, but a 1/4" difference looks like a mistake IMHO and can be dysfunctional going forward.

I would suggest that it go slightly past the end of the butcherblock counter (a 1/4" or 1/2" past the wood). If you went all the way to the doorframe, then it would need to go down to the floor, I guess (which would look strange). Good advice above about removing the height difference between the soapstone and the butcherblock surfaces, but if both are already in place and aren't going to be updated, it's actually not so bad because it highlights the difference in functional areas and surfaces.

Our 1/4" difference between the BB and stone is intentional. Matching them would not work since the BB would swell and contract with humidity and go out of flush with the stone. So far so good on the 1/4" and this means we don't have a shift in tile pattern to deal with. It also did not require installing base cabinets of a different height that would then need to be replaced if we decide to swap out the BB for stone in the future.

We ended up bringing the standard subway tile to match the edge of the shelf ledger. While extending beyond the counter top as suggested would have looked great, it would have made a funny interaction with the switch plate and we don't have anywhere else to put that.
