We are getting ready to completely gut our kitchen and install all new (stock) cabinets. I'm basically starting with a clean slate, so I have lots of wiggle room.

We can't afford to remodel our kitchen AND hire a designer, so I'm designing the layout myself. But I'm having trouble finding even a single article on how to arrange the location of each set of cabinets. Maybe my search terms have been all wrong. Anyway, I'm stumped!

To be clear, I'm NOT referring to the overall layout of the kitchen, I have that licked (I'm familiar with the ideal "triangle," the galley layout, etc). What I need help with is planning the most functional location of each set of cabinets in the kitchen.

For instance, where is it suggested a set of drawers be installed, near the sink? The stove? Or both? Assuming a trash compactor should be nearby a sink, what is the recommended distance from the sink? And is it wiser to install a pantry cabinet closer to the stove, or the refrigerator?

I realize many of the answers to these questions are going to be subjective. But surely, there have to be some recommended guidelines. Right?

I've lived with dysfunctional kitchen cabinets for so long, I don't know what a functional kitchen feels like. Can anyone recommend a web site, blog or article that might help me to make these decisions for optimum practicality and function?
