Just goes to show you how many variables of soil conditions, warmth, moisture movement and nutrients can occur in what you think should be the same. Could be the three clumps were a bit more mature when harvested.

I'd worry more about the early risers than those that are sound asleep. Those warm spells cause problems even though they are a nice break from winter. For future reference, you don't have to work so hard to plant daffodils or any of its relatives. No hole digging required - just rake back all the mulch/leaf litter and maybe an inch or so of topsoil, sprinkle the bulbs around, rake the mulch back over them. When this families bulbs begin to wake up in late winter they can grow a thick root and pull themselves down to the proper soil level. Other bulbs will do this also but not all of them. You can test it if you want by planting a daff bulb in the top layer of a pot. Dig it up after it's done blooming and you will find the bulb now at the bottom of the pot.
