Know anyone who works in biopharmaceuticals? A family member collected foam inserts from discarded insulated shippers for a hand made upholstered headboard.

High density foam is definitely expensive. If you have a JoAnn Fabric near you, watch for 50% off sales. I've also ordered online for about the same price as one of their sales.

Crib mattresses are made of high density foam. Look on Craig's list or yard sales. I sold one for about $20.00, then I found out the stuff cost retail. Yikes.

How can a pro designer not know what a banquette or booth is?

Cancork's business is flooring specifically, not interior design. They are Pro's and they give fabulous advice here on Houzz.

Some may prefer the term "breakfast nook" but why split hairs. And yes, foam is ridiculous to buy even 1/2 price thru Joanne's. (I've even salvaged good useable stuff from hand-me-down sofas back in the day). But going DIY is not necessarily cheaper - your chosen upholstery shop will supply all the items necessary for you if you go that road.

My concern is that Joanne's wouldn't have high quality foam. I only want to do this once. But I will be going there to check it out today. So much to learn to get it right. Density Firmness, etc., etc. I would love to use professionals for everything but I can afford a $1500 banquette but not a $5400 banquette and that is the pro price I received. I know you get what you pay for but I intend to do my best so that is why I am obsessing about foam.

I would do some research online about density, etc. A few of the websites that sell it have good information.

Density is everything. Also check with places that refurbish boats and campers.

I buy my foam at a commercial fabric store. They sell fabric for upholstery work, curtains, vinyl for boat interiors etc. they also have a large choice of foam. Different densities and thicknesses. Largest selection so far and they will cut to size.

Ohhh, I know what a "banquette" is (banquet has a spelling variation = is often used to describe a large gathering for a meal) ...and a booth (again the primary use in the English language = structure or room). I just wanted to see if the OP could come up with a word that indicated the full meaning of what they were after. Since communication is everything, I just wanted to point out that the word "seating" was missing from the conversation.

So many typos abound (banquet vs banquette) I just wanted to see if the word "bench" would pop up.

We used to do yachting upholstery, and normal price to pay (for the good stuff) is about $100 per seat, so depending on the size of your bench you could be paying 200-350 dollars. Now that's in Canada, maybe it's cheaper in the states... Try to look up wholesale foam suppliers, sometimes they will sell to general public. Also some upholstery shops will sell it you at a smaller mark-up than the store. Good luck.

I wouldn't go for Joann's foam. Their selection is limited in sizes and you may not be able to find piece(s) that are long or wide enough. But, more important than that is I don't think the foam is a high enough grade for you intended use. I have purchased foam for a dog bed I was making and couldn't believe how much it cost. Check with a local upholsterer. Just plan on paying some money.

That is what I'm thinking. I am estimating around 500 right now. Way more than the fabric. Unless I go for the Emu Lime!

I once cut up a memory foam mattress topper (left over from college) and used it to form the seat cushion when upholstering a hope chest. It's held up surprisingly well... probably because the foam was pretty dense. Just an idea! I've seen high density 4" mattress toppers for $100 or so.

I also used an old mattress cover but it was for a dog bed. That's not exactly like the rigors you will experience with banquette cushions. My dog loves it though.

I did. Their prices are a little more than another aite I found that was a lot more descriptive than foammart. I will probably call an upholster next week to try to get a price. I just don't see why they would want to sell it to me if they aren't doing the work and I am afraid of the markup. Will look into the memory foam this weekend. Any ideas on how to cut it? I also think I would probably still need another layer of foam. At least that is what one goam site said. They said it will still bottom out without it.

If you have one, an electric knife is perfect for cutting foam. I've used one several times and you get a nice even cut.

Have you Googled? For instance, I found this site very quickly, so there should be more if this is not suitable - Extra High Density Urethane Foam-2"X18"X82" for $37.25 and free shipping. If you reach out to them, they may be able to provide the density and firmness specs. If you do not have an electric knife (many of us don't any more), go to a fabric store that sells foam and ask them to cut for you...they will charge a minimal fee if anything at all.

I am looking to purchase from a site or store that actually knows the specifications of the form, i.e. density and firmness specifications. There is a huge range of types. Fabric stores really don't provide that info.

Like Kat said⤴️ an electric carving knife will cut the foam easily.

To update this post. Yes, I was able to find great quality foam through a mattress manufacturer. The banquette turned out beautiful and I enjoyed it for 3 months! House flooded 2 feet in Louisiana floods in August and banquette was destroyed. Cabinet maker wanted $5000 to rebuild. After thinking about it...I didn't love it $5000 worth! Putting my money elsewhere and will buy a beautiful countertop height breakfast set!
