I agree that sectional is too large for that area. Look for a smaller one

Hi kbigelo, I might be the odd man out here probably because I am a bit biased about having a big sectional especially in a casual living area that'll be used as an everyday lounging area. And if there are plans for a TV in this space (I'm guessing on that common wall between the family room and bedroom 5), I'm even a bigger fan of one. :-)

But to the other posters' points, you do want to make sure that the sectional won't feel as if it's overwhelming the space too much (for you especially)......and that there's some "breathing" room around the sectional.......at least so you, your family and/or guests won't feel like it's overcrowded in there.

You mentioned that the model had a sectional....and seems like you liked the look and the feel of that. Is the model the same floor plan as your home? Or perhaps it's a different plan, but the family room dimensions are the same/similar? If either applies, have you measured the size of the sectional used in there?

I looked up the Caracole sectional (very nice, quality brand btw :-))...and if I'm looking at the correct one, it measures 118x118 (x 40" in depth). That's close to 10 ft. x 10 ft. Can't really see the dimensions well, but it looks like the 2 walls (the staircase cases and the window wall) are around 12 ft. in length.....? With the TV wall (the wall between the family room and bedroom) around 10.5 ft.....is that correct?

So, the sectional *may* just fit ....even "on paper". But, for some, this would be a very close/tight fit. Again, I personally don't mind the look and feel of a big comfy sectional in a space like this. (See examples below of [smaller] spaces with relatively larger-sized sectionals). But for you, you may not like the look or feel of it once everything's in place (and then it'd be costly to change at that point).

So....before committing one way or the other, you may want to:

1) Confirm the size of the sectional used in the model home....how does it compare length/width/depth wise to the Caracole sectional?

2) Review the other furnishings (coffee/side tables, lamps, other chairs, if applicable, etc.). that was used in the model in the same room as the sectional and compare it to what you plan on having for the space. Do those other pieces correlate closely to the sizes you already have or plan to use in the room, too?

3) Using painters tape, tape out the measurements of the Caracole sectional (or any other sectional you may consider) along with perhaps a potential coffee table, etc. to get a better feel of those pieces in your space. This is assuming also that the model home doesn't have the same or similarly-sized sectional, tables, etc. where you can get a good idea of the overall feel already.

Anyway, just some suggestions that hopefully help for you to figure out if this sectional (or whichever one you choose) will look and feel right for you in the space.

Btw, one other thing to consider.....do you want or need to have any other (comfortable) separate seating in the space. For some folks, having individual area(s) to sit may be important....maybe for a guest/relative that visits regularly or for a spouse that prefers their own chair, i.e. a hubby's "man chair".

If so, you don't necessarily need to give up the idea of a sectional.....maybe just consider a smaller one (or a "sofa with chaise" type sectional). That could then give you more space to add 1-2 smaller, yet still comfy, chair(s).....or 1 recliner or chair + ottoman....?

And again, create a layout, then measure and tape out the potential pieces on the floor to see how it works for you before committing.

I'd go with the sofa and chairs. The sectional will be a tight fit. Maybe a sectional with a chaise, since these are smaller.

I love your ideas with the 'movable' coffee table/seating!
