Where to place the sink?

last modified: 10 years ago

We are renovating a bathroom and this is the new vanity. It is a total 45 inches wide. The angled piece is a separate piece but the overall length will be 45" when they are put together. I can't decide where to place the sink. It is a standard rectangular under mount sink (not sure of exact size at the moment). Should it be centred with the large door, or between the large front facing door and drawers, or centred in the over all 45 " width which would be to the left of the large door. We plan to have a large mirrored, inset medicine cabinet for the mirror and I assume it would cover most of the vanity width and be centered over the entire cabinet. We are going to look at a slab of granite tomorrow and they said we should know where sink placement will be so that the most beautiful part won't get cut out. Thanks for any ideas.

I should add, the left side will be beside a wall.

Depends on a few things. If those are working drawers then I would set the sink centered over the door. That would be my first choice anyway. If the mirror will be the full width it wouldn't matter where the sink goes. It would matter if you were centering a smaller mirror over the sink, using sconces etc.

There are 2 working drawers but the top is just a panel. Likely because if a person had only this unit, they might want to centre the sink and then the top drawer would be in the way. I kind of stated it wrong in my first comment that if centred on the overall 45" run, it would be to the left of the cabinet door. It would be centred there as the drawers on the left are the same width as the back of the angled piece. I would have just centred the sink and been done with it but DH wants it off centre so there is a larger run of usable counter top. Since it's not very large, centering will mean a small amount on either side. But I don't think it is too small. The mirror will be a large 3 door medicine cabinet and I expect the centre door will be wide with a narrow side door on either side. That's what most of them look like. 40 inches wide seems common and quite likely what we would get. So if the sink isn't centred to the large mirror door will it look weird??

Compositionally I think it would look best centered on the large door.

I second that. (In fact, I can't think of a reason to locate it anywhere else...aesthetically or practically!).

    Centered over the cabinet door.

Thanks for the opinions. Much appreciated.

I was going to say the sink should be centered over the cabinet door. But then you said you were going to have a 3-piece mirror. If putting the sink over the cabinet means you'll end up with a mirror seam over your face, then center the sink over the entire width of the vanity.

Thanks for your thoughts. DH agrees now that the sink should be placed centred with the main cabinet door. That does centre it with the slanted part added on. And then with a 3 door mirrored medicine cabinet centred over the 45 inch width, the sink and tap would be nicely centred with that as well. That part has now been decided.
On another note did anyone notice how unevenly positioned the door and the drawers are?? It is just disgusting and I am awaiting word from Home Depot about it. The top panel over the door is way high on the left side. To the point that it is 1/4 inch above the top of the frame and screwed into place like that. The 3 drawers panels do not line up with each other at all. This is a Thomasville cabinet with an expensive painted and hand streaked finish and we paid a lot of money for all the pieces. I am very disappointed considering I heard mostly only good before we decided to order these. The HD lady is suggesting this is just a little adjustment that is required because it shifted during shipping. I don't see how panels that are screwed in place will shift like this. Also there is a tag and an arrow and a name on the top frame pointing to that badly placed top panel, like someone inspected it and wanted it fixed. But it obviously wasn't. My DH can likely fix it all and I told her that\-for a discount. I think that's why she is making it sound like a simple adjustment. Any thoughts on what I should expect for a discount? He will have to drill a new hole for that top panel. And depending, possibly fill the old one if it is too close when drilling the new one. The drawer panels can likely be unscrewed or loosened and possibly re\-adjusted on their existing brackets, but DH will have to see first if they will align without removing and putting the brackets on in new positions. I did send HD good clear photos of the arrow and showing how badly put together this was.

OK, so I added the photos I sent to Home Depot. Advise and thoughts appreciated.

All of that is adjustable and not a big deal at all. Learn how to do it as you generally need to tweak them some as the seasons change.

The parts that are way out of whack are in no way adjustable. We've had kitchen cupboards that are similar in build and nothing but the hinged doors need adjusting from time to time. That top panel is on a bracket and permanently screwed into the frame of the cabinet. There are no sliding slots for it to move up, down or sideways. And the panels on the pull out drawers are screwed in and can be unscrewed and adjusted a tad, but only one way. None of my kitchen drawer panels can just be adjusted with the weather either. This is all shoddy workmanship which, yes, my husband can fix, but shouldn't have to for the price we paid. The only part that is placed correctly is the hinged door which can be adjusted in a number of ways.

Looks like it was a return and instead of returning to manufacturer they just put it back in stock. I think 25-33% off would be about right. But first see what they offer.

    silken1-

I am amazed that it passed final inspection liike that. Someone at the factory was on drugs that day. You are absolutely correct that the door is the only thing you should ever have to adjust. Please let us know what the store does to resolve this. Good luck!

I've been waiting 10 or 11 days now for a response. Trying to be patient but at some point I shouldn't have to wait any longer.

    silken1-

It's hard to get action when you are sending stuff to a large bureaucracy, and expecting that your priority is their priority. I suggested above that you do an in-person visit with the store manager, and I'm going to recommend that even more so now. The main thing I want to caution you about is that you have waited quite a while to get this fixed and you have every reason to be annoyed...but communicating too much of that annoyance can work against you in a one-on-one situation where you are looking for the best outcome. Visit the manager, calmly present your case, and firmly request a resolution. If you get resistance, you can be more forceful. But I believe that friendly but firm diplomacy is your best tactic. Ask for what you want, rather than thinking that they'll be able to figure it out themselves. And good luck.

Thanks kudzu9 for the advice. And I will use it. I worked for a telephone company for 31 years in customer services of various types and am known for my patience and cool and diplomatic manner. So hopefully I haven't forgotten it all since I retired :) The only reason I haven't gone higher yet, is I wanted to give the lady in charge of the kitchen and bath area who we dealt with a fair time, between her shifts, weekends etc. and her waiting for the Thomasville rep. One thing I hate is you doing your job trying to rectify a problem, and a customer going over my head to my boss without a fair chance to fix it myself. So maybe I wait longer having been on the other end for so many years myself. But I will take it higher-rest assured. Thomasville is supposedly known for their lovely cabinets and beautiful furniture and we paid a lot for our cabinets. It was our highest quote. But I went and fell in love with a hand brushed finish which cost us an upcharge of 25% more-just for the finish. So to have this piece of crap sitting in my living room sure is a disappointment. Our builders haven't started yet and haven't confirmed a date which was supposed to be end of Jan or Feb. So I am not in a panic yet, but don't want to be in a panic. I e\-mailed the HD lady yesterday morning asking if she had anything for me but no word yet. In addition to this cabinet, they sent us one 96 inch filler that they forgot to paint. We ordered 2 and one is in the proper finish, the other appears to have the under coat white base. I think this was all done on a Friday in the Thomasville shop :(

Well, you definitely sound like you can handle this. I think we share a common philosophy on problem resolution, and it's clear I don't need to give you any more tips. I mistakenly presumed that you were being a little too passive about this, but clearly not. That approach and attitude should get you a good result.

I don't like to go to war, and do what I can to prevent it. But if I have to I will, and will possibly win :) I just called the Home Depot lady and asked her for an update. she is still waiting to hear from the Thomasville rep. She apologized and said she would try to reach him again. DH has me fight all the battles we are faced with because I am better at it!

But I do appreciate people's opinions of how this cabinet looks and what I should reasonably expect as a resolution.

Whew, for anyone interested in what happened about my sloppy looking vanity cabinet, I finally got it resolved. I didn't hear anything until Jan. 25th when I went into Home Depot for other things and stopped by the kitchen/bathroom desk. The lady I had been dealing with said she just sent me an e-mail. Apparently the Thomasville rep saw my pics and said that was normal. So I tried to show her on the sample cabinet, that it wasn't simple adjustments and she didn't want to look and claimed it was above her skill level, yadda yadda. If I wanted to speak to the Thomasville rep, I could. So I told her she couldn't just dump the problem in my lap and have me doing her job for her. I bought them from HD not Thomasville, so they should be going to bat for me. Then I asked for her supervisor. The supervisor was very nice and promised to look into it. Again after a week and a day of nothing I called and left a message for the supervisor to call me back. Instead the rep from Masterbrand cabinets (I guess Thomasville falls under that umbrella or something) called and I told him everything and he had already seen my pictures. I also told him that during our married life, DH and I had ordered and installed two entire sets of similar kitchen cabinets and had never received even one unit looking like that. I also had a few other small issues with Home Depot over this cabinet order (we also ordered enough cabinets for a floor to ceiling unit) that were minor and I hadn't been focusing on. so I clued him in about them too., In the end he said he would call the supervisor and give me a monetary compensation for all the hassle and the long wait. I got about 1/3 the cost of the cabinet credited back to my credit card as of today.

While waiting for all of this to settle out, our bathroom reno has started. Our builder , who has been building for 25 or 30 years had a look at the cabinet and agreed, leveling and installing and a few tweaks were not going to make it look good. It will take a bit more. He said "where did you get that!!" Pretty sad when something we paid so much money for looks like crap to everyone we have showed it to.

But we will get it looking good and I feel I have been fairly compensated for out time and trouble. I just hope the rest of our reno goes OK.

Thanks for updating...I was wondering if you had any success. That's quite a sad commentary on all of the folks who should have stepped up to go to bat for you, but didn't. Anyway, glad there is progress and that you got some compensation. I guess name brands aren't what they used to be, and Customer Service is anything but sometimes. When companies do stuff like this and it gets posted on forums like this, they lose not only future sales but goodwill.

What bothers me is I wasn't even going to buy from Home Depot and we had gotten a quote from Kitchen Craft who had made our kitchen cabinets. But then I saw this brushed finish and really liked it on the demo at HD and just wanted it. The quote was somewhat higher than Kitchen Craft but we decided we weren't going to scrimp and had waited a long time for this new bathroom so we just decided to go with it. I did lots of Googling and research on Thomasville and figured I was getting a good quality cabinet. We paid over $6,000 for what you see in the photos here and some 15 inch deep, 36 inch wide units to make a floor to celling unit. When I see what people paid for entire kitchens, it seems expensive. This is why I felt so ripped off to receive the sink cabinet in the shape it was. I will not order from them again, even tho in the end there was some compensation. It took way too long and I felt I really had to fight for it.

You're absolutely right to feel that way.
