We last redid our kitchen in 1985, shortly after we bought our home (built 1968.) It's now in need of an update, but I don't want to do a whole overhaul. I'm thinking about refinishing the cherry cabinets, or perhaps refacing them. New flooring is a must and also a new sink and countertop. The wallpaper is going, possibly replaced by a decorative paint treatment like sponging, in a cream tone. The taupe trim I'm thinking of redoing in a warmer tone, like a caramel. All this is subject to change, however--I haven't done a thing yet except drool over other people's pictures!

The adjoining family room was redone a year ago, completely paneled in natural cherry, with mostly contemporary and Danish modern teak furniture from the 60s. I love how it turned out. I basically want to lose the country look in the kitchen, go a little more contemporary, without spending a fortune or changing the layout. It's a very efficient kitchen to work in, though tight on storage space.

I'd appreciate any input. Especially looking for help with flooring, countertop, and paint/paper suggestions. Oh--and what about that tile? It's very pretty, and in perfect condition, but certainly not a contemporary look. Should I replace it?
