Put it in the freezer in a nice foam lined box.

make sure you leave a nicer piece in your jewelry box so the thieves won't ransack the whole house. same with a couple $20s under your socks.

You can get a fake electrical outlet that has a small compartment in the wall behind it; looks exactly like a real outlet otherwise. You could the "wrap it in foil and stick it in the freezer" method. However, if you have really valuable jewelry and are concerned about theft, you really should invest in having a wall safe installed in a closet.

How about inside a pitcher or vase that is just sitting there on a shelf?

I do have a security system, but it doesn't stop burglars as they are in and out in less time than it takes for the police to arrive. Freezer suggestions? No good. Thieves know to look there - it is a very common place to stash cash. They also pry open cold air return vents - happened to a friend during a break-in, even though there was nothing there. I may have to spring for a safe. It will at least give protection against a smash and grab robbery.

HI -- I own a locksmith/security business . Everything that has been mentioned is all known by experienced thieves so.... invest in a small safe or a wall safe or a floor safe . Any of these can be put anywhere such as the floor safe can go into the basement floor or under where the dog's dish is or wall safes can be put in a child's room or a laundry room under or behind the dryer or in the linen closet or in the attic or a ceiling . Any where . And when you get one bolt it in or secure it and don't show it off to your friends and neighbors or even talk about it . You would be surprised how many people do . If a thief gets in they are not going to take the time to look around for it . Investing in a pre-entry alarm also helps but thieves know how much time it takes for the police to get there .
