Kitchen cabinet dilemma

I want to add 12" cabinets-to make my kitchen cabinets go up to the ceiling. Is it okay if they are a little different than all the other wall and base cabinets? I also need one base cabinet so I was thinking of carrying that theme to that base cabinet to tie it all together. What do yo think???

Most cabinet interiors are maple or white . So you can have the 12" upper cabinets above the existing cabinets with glass doors with matching your existing cabinet interior. As for the base cabinets , you can have a contrast . You cannot have it attached to existing cabinet unless you find very similar cabinets. It can be as an island or an independent cabinet on a different wall. Pictures would help.
