spectacular hollies

it must have been a good year for berry production on hollies since i see these shrubs often and never really paid much attention to them until this year. some of them are very old and large and some of the pics show a long row around a property. all of these photos were taken two weekends ago. i don't know what kind they are since i did not go onto the properties to take a close-up but chose to stay on the road to photograph. guessing ilex opaca but not sure.

this first photo is from notasulaga, al at an old home site. compare the height to the single-level home in the background. pic is not sharp - the sun was directly behind the top of the tree.

these are found at another older home in loachapoka, al., trained to a single trunk.

last ones are from a large property with an older home, also in loachapoka. most of these were fairly recently planted but there is one older shrub near the home (featured in the last photo). the rows are quite long and frame the property boundary on two sides.

That settles it - I'm going back to Columbiana this weekend to take a picture of a holly that is absolutely spectacular and post it here as well. Like you, I have passed many over the years and never taken much notice until this year. It must be, as you alluded to, the "Year of the Holly". Even my needlepoints have berried-up better than ever. And if I'm not mistaken, that little bit of extra fluttering in the trees across the way tells me the cedar waxwings have arrived and taken notice. Yea!

Better late than never. Found myself in WILSONVILLE (not Columbiana) this evening and took pictures of the holly I described above. It is, as I stated, spectacular...

an unbelievable amount of fruit. Most probably I. 'Burfordii'. I purchased two this past weekend and will never ever, in my wildest imagination, live to see them grow to be this magnificent.

I spoke with the owner of Maple Valley Nursery this afternoon, and he agreed that the lack of an early frost this past Spring, along with a long growing season, was responsible for the majestic hollies we see fruiting this year. Jeff, thanks again for the post!
