Maybe because of the pattern of the curtains I picture a grouping of smaller artwork or photographs. I would lose the quilt on the arm of the chair and find something that matches better with the style of your beautiful new furniture.

I think it needs a bigger picture and also see an opportunity to use lots of of color.

That's a great point. Aargh! This is so hard! I like what you've found here because it doesn't compete, but I really love dramatic color pops too, so I don't know...? It looks like the frame I've got is definitely too small, though.

The frame you have is too small in my opinion but then I like huge art. I still want to see a photo wall or grouping... if not over the sofa then maybe around the piano. Personalize the room on that wall with your musical instruments and entertainment.

The more I look at this room, the more I feel like it's too cluttered and knicky-knacky. So I'm definitely leaning toward a giant piece of art. I'm afraid a gallery wall would feel too cluttered.

The only knick knacky thing about that entire room is the piano wall. 9 items on the piano for instance. I'd only have the bust up there. I think de-knick-knacking that problem area would help the room tremendously instead of trying to decorate around it. That side seems to be your creative area and I'm just going with what you've already started by suggesting a personal gallery grouping.

Your art or pictures/mirror above sofa should cover 2/3-3/4 of wall space behind sofa. For you at 81" should be 55-60". Bottom of art should be 5-7" above sofa

Is there any reason you have the TV in the corner. Invest in a new console to clean up the components. . Also re-do top of piano with a new picture.

tedbixby, you are so right! We just put that table there to see how it works, and now I know the answer! Nothing gets past you Houzzers. And orange is a great suggestion.

As I painter I only hang art that I love, either by an artist I know or me, lol.
Art is very personal and should speak to you.
You need a nice large piece above your sofa, but take your time and don't just go online and buy a generic print.
There's lots of talent out there. Can you visit a gallery or two and get some ideas.
Art doesn't need to " match" your furniture.
It should be a statement, something you love!

If it were me, I would keep the gold mirror above the piano only if I could get a metal round gold type table to place by the recliner.

Please remove everything else from the piano and just get a piano light and a metronome for the top of the piano.

Remove the two small brown tables by the stair. Remove the knick knacks on the TV stand and replace with bins/baskets to hold functional stuff for the TV to erase the look of clutter.

Replace the curtains with 95 inch panels and hang from ceiling. Same curtains only floor to ceiling

The lamps need to be replaced with something either metal or pottey; the crystal globes are too romantic for the room.

Put the other black picture by the TV, on the stair wall on an angle going up next to the LIFE print

Art over the sofa as suggestd 2/3 -3/4 width of sofa.

Buy one more turquoise bench and line the three up; put a small black tray on one of them for remotes, etc.

gogark, finndian's choice would be a great jumping off point for a very sophisticated room. Please invest in a new TV stand that's as long as you can get to fit flat on the stair wall and hide the TV accoutrement.

You know, I've been reluctant to get another tv stand that was a heavy wooden box, afraid it would compete with the piano- another heavy wooden box. But groveraxle's mock-up looks great! I guess the key would be not to get anything too dark or matchy with the piano, huh?

Yes, get a console that is compatible with the piano. I don't think it is necessary to have that long console under the staircase. Moving the picture over the piano looks good.

I would remove those table from the staircase wall, use one for a side table for the chair (so move it closer), hang a nice picture on staircase wall and get a console for the TV next to piano.

I would prefer the piano and the TV be on different walls. Having them both on the same wall makes the room very heavy on that side. And while either could go on either wall, I like the TV on the stair wall with a long console so the whole wall becomes part of the room.

groveraxle is right on... making use of the stairwall is the perfect solution. A long and low console. It solves what is wrong with your room. That and the quilt! :P

Long TV stands that aren't exorbitantly expensive are hard to come by. Here is one that's 86" long, though it's very low, only 14" tall.

No mirrors for this room. I exaggerated the depth of the art pieces so you could see them better. This rendering is not to scale but I simply switched TV and piano. You also want the piano on an interior wall, so that thought might apply. Looks like you may have room for a second chair if you want.

The DNA of the design of the universe is based on the Fibonacci numbers and the Golden Proportion. You can see it in the spiral of a seashell to the rings of Saturn. The Taj Mahal has this proportion, as well. If your frame was 3" less wide, it would be the perfect size, leaving the correct width on each side of it over the couch.

To figure the perfect height and fill the wall over the couch, draw a line from the top corners of the couch to the ceiling where it is at the center of the couch. The point that the top corners of the frame touch that diagonal line is the height.

The long low console against the stair wall is such a great idea - it solves so many of my problems. Thanks, groveraxle! And finndian, my mother made that quilt, so I won't tell her you said that! :)

In typical Houzz style, I came in for art and am leaving with furniture! The abstract art finndian found, while absolutely gorgeous, has been nixed by my spouse, who doesn't like abstract art (Philistine!). But I might hang maybe three related prints above the sofa until I find the right thing.

Do you think the console should be the same wood tone as the piano?

Don't get me wrong the quilt is great! As your living room is getting more and more sophisticated looking it is looking more and more out of place however.

I would get any console that is an appropriate size and style, and not be concerned about the finish. Black, white, wood in the tones of the piano or closer to that of the end tables--any of those would work. You're probably going to find the pickings on long TV consoles pretty slim.

I'd tey for something at least 2/3 the width of the couch... if lots of color then neutral pillows, if not then color in the pillows....

Okay, I took down the gold mirror above the piano and centered the peacock print and removed most of the stuff off the top. It's amazing how much more spacious it feels!

I know you're probably all going to tell me to scrap the vase with the peacock feathers in it, but change comes slowly! :)

Your piano looks identical to my Yamaha, including the music light. The problem I have with the room is that the two big dark square objects are sharing the same space, and even more so in some of the suggested illustrations. Does the end of the room we're not seeing open up to a foyer, dining, kitchen or wha?. We have a balance issue here and we're only seeing three "walls" of your room. Either the TV or the piano needs to be the focal point since you apparently don't have a fireplace or other feature to focus the room around.

Look for a wide, low TV credenza. Check out Ikea. I love your mom's quilt. It is just that it stands out in the room as it is about the only thing that has color in it. So add some more color in art you both love.

I won't tell Hubby you called him a name, but work on him, eh? In the meantime, don't go too small or too mousy on the art. The first rendering uses your original frame plus another matching one.

The vase with peacock feathers probably goes on the end of the new console you're getting, right where I put the fern in one of the renderings. ;-)

I think your art over the sofa problem is solved, except for finding art that you and hubby love. The other issue is the two chunky dark boxes (TV and piano) causing imbalance on that end of the room. You need a focal point when one enters the room, and the sofa may be it, but here's another option. We haven't seen the 4th wall in this space. I assume one enters the front door somewhere near the stairwell. Do you play the piano regularly or is it of sentimental import?

for a high end look - how about a pair or a full grouping of intaglio art.

Thank you everybody - this is so helpful! The wall you're not seeing - I'll post pictures when I get home - is windows that look out to the front yard. You walk in the front door, and to your right is the stairs leading up and the living room, and to the left is the dining room and kitchen.

So the piano has to stay where it is because that's the only wall that's interior and wouldn't be blocking an air vent. (We don't want our heater blowing directly on our piano, for obvious reasons.) Someone asks if it gets played, and the answer is yes, every day. The "where do we put the TV" question has haunted us from the beginning for all the reasons you point out, and a long, low console might just solve it!

Question: Should we plan for the console to go flush against the corner, or should it be more centered on the stair wall?

Also, in terms of art, we have these vintage magazine covers (Life, Vogue) which we really like. Should we aim to continue that style over the couch, or could we vary it? I'm thinking about getting three 16x20 prints of instruments done in a MCM style, but wonder if it will look weird next to our vintage stuff. Here's what I'm thinking about:

Use some painter's tape and tape out the size of the TV on the stairwell wall so there is wall framing it all around. You don't want it overlapping the steps or railing. Then measure to be sure you have room for a credenza 25% wider than the set. That may be large enough without going all the way to the corner. BTW, isn't the stairwell wall an interior one?

Maybe hang the tv? If closet under stairs, all equipment and wires can be in there. You will need rf so remote can turn on/off through wall. Then, maybe just a long, low shelf...tv does not have to be centered on shelf/console.

My sofa is 72 inches long . I am currently interested in an abstract art piece that measures 52”x 52”.
Is this print to large?

Marc, this is somebody else's old thread, so mine will probably be the only reply you get . Width-wise, your art should be roughly 2/3 - 3/4 the width of your sofa, so 52" will work. Whether or not the height works depends on the size of the wall and what other furniture is in the vicinity.
