Tile ideas

last modified: 10 years ago

We are in the process of adding a master bath and I am having the hardest time trying to get a clear vision of what I want.

It will be a new space attached to our old house. Subway tile, beehive floor and marble would be very appropriate for my age house but I already have a total originally tiled bath and another newer tiled marble and subway bath so I think I want something different.

I loved the encaustic tile I have seen but DH, not so much. We both like the wood look tile but not sure how it might look abutting our real wood floors in the adjoining room.

i also like the linen look tiles and the large rectangular formats they offer but they are more modern than the rest of the present house.

here is a floor plan of the room

We are just doing a shower no tub and the wall visible from my bedroom will have an antique dresser sink flanked by armoires for storage. I want it to look like a dressing room not a bath from my room. Here is a not to scale mock up.

Any ideas or pictures of your wood like tiles abutting real wood floors and how you handled the transition between the not matching wood patterns and color?

Are these all horrible? The bottom strip shows my bed room floor. Right side is shower tile ideas.

faux marble porcelain. First. Concrete tiles second with faux marble shower, second and third is linen porcelain with marble shower.

Last two are wood look tiles. I would lay in a herringbone pattern.

I agree with your concerns about the wood and linen tiles.

A few months ago, I was helping someone in Baths who lived in a tiny NY apartment. She found this 8" porcelain hexagon tile that comes in several colors and is so pretty. Click on the tiles to see in more detail.

I could only find this solid tile when I searched Houzz. I think this is pretty too. I thought of it because it sounds like you'd like a bigger tile for this project while staying true to the style of your home.

I like the second option best.

I have seen many many posts about problems with real marble in showers-- apparently it tends to absorb water and discolor unless the waterproofing and installation and sealing is done perfectly. YMMV, just something to consider!

Are you considering a composite wood floor? Meaning not real wood? One of my best friends put down ceramic tile that is colored to look like wood, it is gorgeous. I have seen some floors in a showroom that looked like fine wood. I would not lay a herringbone pattern, to me it looks too busy and detracts from the beauty of your armoires. But that's just me. A herringbone might look OK if the color of the wood tile was the same tone as the armoires. On my monitor, the wood tones you have chosen seem not to go with the wood of the sink cabinet and armoire, but that might be just a computer monitor view issue. Whatever the grey is for the flooring I wouldn't do,but then I am not a huge fan of the color grey. As a side note, what is the plural of armoire? :)

Thanks! Mayflowers, I did not consider large format hexagons, I have small ones in two other baths now.

the wood would be porcelain wood look tiles if we go that route. The marble would also be porcelain to avoid etching.

my English husband has been referring to the armoires as wardrobes to avoid the plural I think.

Yes, I knew that's what you meant when you said beehive tile, so that's why the large hexes popped into my mind. I'm not a fan of the wood tile. I can deal with faux stone but there's something about faux wood that has never appealed to me. I also prefer bath tile that doesn't have a direction so I did 16" squares in mine.

This is my favorite tile, but DH thinks it is too busy. It is encaustic concrete tile.

I think you should compromise. Buy DH something nice and get that encaustic for yourself. You can't pick out something because the others all look like lesser choices!

Me too:(. I will keep trying to persuade DH. It is less per square ft than all his choices so maybe budget will work in my favor this project

    I vote encaustic!!

my 2 cents on the wood look tile: I was on board until I saw the wooden vanity and armoires. Then I started thinking with wood look tile that's an awful lot of wood in a bathroom. And it would be difficult, I believe, to get the right tone of tile that would be harmonious with the wood. And with the wood floor.

Here is an acoustic my DH was more open to. I thought they were a little too dark and not sure about the pattern. They are twelve by twelve to gage scale. scale. The colors ayes are grey, graphite and cotto which is brown.

And this is a large formate hexagon, they come in grey or beige.

think I am still liking the blue in my first encaustic tile....

Nope. Need the blue one. Let him pick out the toilet. Everyone wins.

Roarah, I adore the first (blue) encaustic tile.....you must convince your DH :-)

Dyhgarden I used your floor in one of my mockups, but i enlarged it too much! I love your bathroom and everything else I have seen of your new house! Stunning!

    Thanks.

I seriously wanted patterned tile like your encaustic examples. I couldn't find anything in my local tile stores that worked for me.

Take a look at this photo of blue patterned tile (French interior) in a bathroom with a double black vanity. I LOVE this look!

This may or may not be up your alley but have you considered brick flooring? I think it could be very pretty with the pieces you're putting in and it's low maintenance.

I love the brick lukkiirsh! Can you heat brick floors?

I dunno...but they are used for fire places and the like, so I'm wondering why it wouldn't be possible. My sister has brick in her kitchen (like Tib's is doing) and I think it's beautiful. The upkeep is very easy too. :c)
