I do think that the color grey has run its course. White will always be a classic choice & will not ever go out of style. Even white appliances. I really regret buying SS.

I'd go with white cabinets and stay away from any trends, especially since you've always wanted a white kitchen. That color from KraftMaid looks like they are trying to introduce a variation of grey, and I'd stay away from it.

White kitchens have been popular for over 100 years....they look clean and fresh, which is a great environment for preparing food. Also, no one will ever walk into a white kitchen and say, "Strange, I wonder why they painted it white...." Now's the time to have the kitchen you've been longing for.

The mushroom is pretty, and would also work, but IMO is not as appealing as white. Maybe you could use a mushroomy color for your backsplash....it would play nicely against the right shade of white.

White is a classic save the mushroom color for walls with the white kitchen.

Also think white is the better choice :)

Would it look ok to use mushroom for the base cabinets or the island?

I sure appreciate the input. I really do like the mushroom color, which is a lighter version of my greige-ish dining room walls. We've had the wall paint for about seven years, and I never tire of it. That said, a color that's seven years old is likely to be on its way out.

on the other hand, there's a lot to be said for choosing what you love. I'd like to toy with the idea of perhaps mixing white and mushroom.

Hi Kim: I love this mushroom color, as it plays off the wood floors nicely, is it the right fit - I do not know. Location of where you live, a northeast traditional neighborhood the color would be welcomed. Take note of how much natural light you are getting for the dark color will "age & date" the space. The idea of mixing colors is thoughtful to the space, take a look at the entire scope with a trusted professional and place samples in the space so you can minimally experience the finishes, best to your remodel!

If your oak cabinets have a light-medium finish rather than a dark finish and are still in good shape, I'd not paint them. Anything painted will inevitably need repainting and look awful as it begins to do so. Oak can also have a tendency to develop fine cracks or splits that don't show up as much with a natural wood grain finish but are glaring defects when painted white or any other color.

If you painted only your base cabinets, how well would the color you're considering go with the flooring? If you choose to paint, start with the base cabinets and see how you like the color before you commit to painting all the cabinets. If you have an island in your kitchen, you might consider painting it that mushroom color you're considering for only the island base cabinet to add a splash of different to your kitchen.

Forget following trends -- it's your home so opt for what you truly like.

Affirming Kitchen Clarity: Thank you. I think we're going to go with white uppers and wood-stained base cabinets. The white will brighten the space considerably, and the wood will ground the room. A white countertop should finish the look. We're probably going to aim for something along this line.

suezbell: Thank you for the suggestion! Unfortunately, painting the cabinets is not an option. We're actually keeping an almost identical footprint, but we're widening a doorway and removing a soffit. We're also relocating the fridge and replacing the old range with a cooktop and double wall oven. So lots of shifting around. Even more of a consideration is the shape of our existing cabinets. They're builder-grade oak from the 80s, and we're ready for better quality AND improved function, such as adding lots of drawers and a more accessible pantry.

We might paint the island in mushroom, but most likely, I'll end up using mushroom for the walls. So many decisions! :)
