Need help with an ugly exterior!!!!

We bought this house for the area but the exterior is ugly. It has no curb appeal! It is a 1960's L shaped modern style ranch. Is there anyway to make this house look cottage"y" or costal? We like the idea of cedar shake siding and stone accents but are truly open to any ideas. Everything can change with exception of the window placement, those have to stay where they are. Help us make this house beautiful and not an eye sore.

It's not a bad house and I think someone had good ideas (planter boxes/trellis) but just went too small and chintzy. Shingles in the gable and a generous pergola &/or "belly band" along the divide between the wall and roof gable would help. Remove the wreath & mingy little trellises,on the front and side of the house and replace with more robust square trellises and beef up the planter boxes for starters.

Maybe a carport with integral pergola and some better strategy to hide the garbage cans and recycle bins would also help. I would avoid stone accents on the house as they are out of context with the simple design of the house. Going for a cottage look is easier and more likely to succeed.

Remember everything looks worse in winter at least you have some nice big trees which will enhance the look once spring arrives.

Congrats on your new house! I agree with much of what was said before....hiding garbage cans, etc. I would try for a better color scheme. If you have to keep the siding color I would at least eliminate the brown trim......possibly a dark sage or olive. Spiffy light fixtures, potted plants, etc would add a lot. If it is in the budget, professional landscaping would make a huge impact.

First simple fix -- Ditch the wreath and add a tree -- something that doesn't get too huge (max 20-25') and one that has four-season interest. Depending on the zone where you live, there are dozens of nice choices. They seem to have a small Japanese maple under one of the windows....you need a tree much larger than that and centered to take up some of the very wide space between those two windows.

Also, you have ONE window framed in white (interior frame), the rest brown. Talk to a window person to see whether painting that one to match is possible, or if there is some other option. It does kind of jump out.

We also bought an "ugly" ranch. Changing the Windows, front door and painting the exterior white dove made a huge difference. Before you spend money changing siding, I would start with Windows, a lighter paint color and landscaping (next on our list!). Someone suggested a tree in between those 2 Windows and I think that's a great idea. Bring your landscaping bed out and layer the plants to add dimension and interest. Will look great!

    That's a good idea, thanks.

I love the idea of a pergola across the front to break up the space.
