Update on Tim

Just want to update all of you that have given great advice thru this broken foot/broken school issues

I called the school last week and I didn't ask..I stated I want a meeting with everyone relevant to Timothys ongoing education and safe transport to and from school..I was there 8.30 this past Monday ..the Principal, Superintendent, the director of transportation, nurse, teacher, and director of special education was waiting...I ask them point blank what arrangements were made to safely transport Timothy to and from school during the remainder of the time he would be in a cast and using crutches...I than ask to allow Timothy to step into the room for just a moment..my husband wheeled Timothy into the room in Amiees wheelchair. His right foot in a cast and his left leg from foot to top of thigh in a metal brace...I introduced my Timothy to those that didn't know him than my husband wheeled Tim back out to wait in the car...than I stood up and handed a letter to the Principal, actually 2 letters one from Tims Ped and one from the ortho stating that Tim has a sprained knee and stress and strain throughout the left (good leg) due to the struggle of getting him off a mini bus last Friday. Every mouth fell open as these letters were passed around and no one looked at me..it was very quiet. Than I said now what arrangements have been made...still no one spoke..so I said if I leave this room without appropriate arrangements being made I WILL go to Channel 4 Action News and my Attorney and I will tell them you are refusing this child an education while he has a cast and crutches..suddenly the director of special education spoke..a minivan for handicap students will be transporting Timothy to and from school as of now, he turned to the principal and ask in front of me why this was not already arranged..the principal said he arranged a mini bus..so to make a long story not any longer..it has finially been worked out..but I had to get aggressive...a few days ago Tim came home and told me the teacher and principal and some other adults came into his class and stood in front of the class and told Tim he's a hero as is his Grandmother and that they were sorry for letting him down...I didn't know they were going to do this, but I see they know theywere wrong.

On a good note here's A few sentences of Tims testing at school.

Make note where it says fifth grader...Tims in second grade..I'm very proud of him

Ditto what Alex said. Cheryl does this EVER end?!! Why did they need to be pushed when they should have treated him just like they want their own child treated. Isn't that elementary?! Thank Heavens children are so resilient! And Grandma's too!

Jean..I'm guessing someone didn't want to do paperwork..but truthfully I don't know why they acted this way...good news is he had a CT scan a few days ago, doc showed me where the break is on the growth plate and showed me how its almost completely healed at least 2 weeks ahead of estimated time. The doctor said only a child very healthy living in a non smoking home could heal this fast..Monday the cast comes off and a walking brace goes on..can't tell you what a relief this is, he will need the wslking brace for 3 weeks and no sports for another month..Tims very upset at the no sports...he loves basketball. But he will have to wait it out lol.

Do sprains like that make that bone stronger? Just wondering especially since it's on a growth plate. I would be so nervous about the basketball and sports!! But since he loves it so much it will help strengthen those bones and muscles!

It sucks that you had to play hard ball but now things are finally in place and (for the most part) over.

    Now for a speedy recovery.

I second what georgect said. And i'm glad they finally see the situation for what it is, just wish it had been a lot sooner. So glad Tim is healing so fast and well.

Most important is that Tim is healing quickly. The byproduct of getting praised at the school also is good for him considering the backstory. That is one lousy principal I will tell you. But the important thing is that they snapped to and did what Tim needs. Once you got in that room with them it must have been clear that the next call you made would be to Channel 4. There's a word for that school admin but it's not a nice one.

Grannie wrath is a powerful thing! I think there should be more of it.

THanks everyone..I'll never forget their faces when they seen Tim, they knew he had a cast but the bus driver never reported that he got hurt on the bus steps so they were confronted with the cast and a full leg brace on the other leg...they know now if Tim has a complaint he's to see the nurse and I'm to be called..the ortho put in writing to the school that Tim was very lucky not to have needed surgery after breaking this growth plate and than having to walk on it throughout the entire day at school. Ya I planned it that way. I'm just glad this is comming to an end...but how many kids in this school are not getting what they should...so I've called an education attorney. .no I'm not filing a claim but I need advice so I know what to do in the future, and I think some changes need done in this school..with out my involvement in sny way lol

It really blows my mind that it was so difficult to accomplish this. Hopefully the problems will end. I'm glad Tim is doing well.

So happy that everything turned out so well for Tim at school. Sometimes you have to get tough to get what you need and are entitled to. Tim is so very lucky that he has a great and strong advocate for him in you. Now you can focus your energies on his recovery and rehab while taking well deserved R and R breaks with laundry.

Thank you for the update, mamap, and I am glad the school is going to do right by your Tim! I hate that you had to go to such extremes, but more often than not it is necessary.
