Congratulations on your re-bloom - can't wait to see it! Have the smaller bulbs re-bloomed for you? The Christmas bulbs are 'programmed' to bloom at that time, however, they re-bloom for me in the spring. -J

Like most of us at Thanksgiving and Christmas, I pretty much go nutz and buy way more hippies than I have room for just to get some color for the holidays. After the first year or so they seem to get back into a more "normal" rhythm and bloom closer to spring. At least mine do too. It definitely is a wonderful treat when they do re-bloom :-))))

What do you do with yours in summer? I put the large one under a shady tree in the pot. The others were planted in the soil in that shade?

I put mine out in the sunny patio (Cambridge, MA) in late spring and give them a good scratch of Holly Tone (acidic fertilizer) and let them do their thing for the summer. I also use Holly Tone for my (too many!!!) clivias, and they respond with amazing growth. By the beginning of fall and before the heavy rains come, I'll put them in the cool basement for about four of five months and rest dry. So far, this has worked for me and quite a few of them are starting to show some scapes and just in time for spring :-)))

thanks I never heard of Holly tone, where is it found at.

Then you let them in the potted soil you have indoors?

I shall try that.. Yes they are so adorable in the crazy winter months . Help fight our winter blahs..........Been a very mild one for the first time I know of. An we are loving it.

You can probably get Holly Tone at any Home Depot, that's where I get mine in the Boston area.

I keep mine potted all the time and I know some folks dry cure (bare root) them for their winter slumber, but hippies and other members of the amaryllis family don't really care to have their roots messed with. Given the chance, they seem to prefer keeping their perennial roots in tact. I think this gives them a much better advantage and will grow healthier. Great luck with yours :-)))

Warning...it smells like poop. It doesn't bother me one bit but others may find it a bit unpleasant. Great luck with your plants :-)))

☺☺☺☺I was wondering if you were going to mention that Fred...my husband uses it each spring on his rhodies and he comes in literally stinking like you know what!! Using it in the house on more than a few plants might need to be talked over with other occupants of the house.;-) If only used on a few plants than one can pass the smell off to the person closest to the plant saying they did it, (you know what I mean)....☺☺☺☺!!!

Of course in all fairness, most granular fertilizers do stink a bit...

When should I put it on ? Before it blooms or after?

Maybe after so I can put it in a spare room to rid the odor??

I usually scratch some into the surface in the spring time and give it a good watering.
