Best way to prevent kids from getting in a room/office?

We have a two year old, and another one on the way. We're planning on building a new home. In that new home we'll have an office as my wife and I are going back to school and need a quiet space to work.

I'm looking for a way to prevent the kids from going in the office and making as mess, as they do, with our "important stuff". The easy answer is a lock on the door, I know. I'm just wondering if someone might have a better idea.

Thanks for your help!

If the door is in a hallway, you could use baby gates. At my church that gave these plastic things that go over the doorknobs. when you twist the knob just the plastic moves, not the doorknob. It works well for kids up to about three. I bet you could buy them at Walmart, or online.

Baby gates are the traditional method. Also, many parents learn to keep everything put away with nothing on top of the desks when not actually working. This will include computers that can be yanked by the cables. Double Dutch doors are another option that could be locked on the bottom if the top is left open.

This post made me chuckle. My office is a constant fascination for my kids! The baby gate worked until they were 1.5 years old and the plastic knob covers worked until they were 3. After that point only a lock would keep them out. Since installing a proper lock on the door, it has been so nice to not have little "treasures" turn up all over the house anymore!

We have a two year old and we have toys for every room. Downstairs push toys and upstairs toys. Husband works from home two days out of the week and sometimes toddler wants to go in to the office. We have two office toys which he can only use in office only. Since he doesn't use them all the time they are very attractive to him when he sees them. This usually allows daddy to work in peace with toddler in room. We also have an old keyboard and monitor. If he is tired of his toys he can pretend to type and practice his letters. Doors are always closed when no adult is in the room

If you don't mind the interruption and want them there sometimes you could set up a dedicated spot to play if you have the space, where they will be happy for a while - see how happy the baby is below!!! If you just don't want them to come in, a baby gate will allow you to see them and if you need quiet, the door. Having three options allows you to be flexible based on your and their needs.

@maggys111 - Huh, never thought of that before... ;)

My two year old already figured out how gates work. He also figured out those plastic things you put on knobs. Our house is filled with toys but, let's be honest, nothing is as exciting as exploring absolutely every little nook and cranny in the house.

Looks like a lock it is!

My 2yo girl never interrupts me. Just give them extra time if they need it. Let them play and run wherever they like because kids see the world differently. They always want something that is forbidden. Dont forbid. Let them play, oversee, explain. It works. Good luck. Fyi only place in my house that has child safety gate is kitchen, because i find kitchen dangerous with all utensils, gas stove and more.

We used the taller baby gates to keep the Texas Lacy Game Dogs out of the office and the cat's area.
