Thoughts on bumping out wall and expand laundry room?

We are in the midst of a kitchen remodel which led to replacing all downstairs floors including laundry room. We also took out the sink cabinet and aren't quite sure what to do now. We have a 3600+ sq ft house and the tiniest laundry room, especially for a family of 5. Oldest 2 kids (9 and 8) play travel ball so there is a lot of laundry. And when our garage is open, everyone comes through this tiny laundry room.

We have a lot of extra space in the garage so I'm toying around with bumping out the wall where the door is. It would give us another 6'X8'. Thinking I can have a decent size laundry room/mudroom. GC gave a very quick estimate of $3k to move wall, electrical and add concrete/subfloor to raise garage floor to house floor.

Is this a crazy idea?

I don't think its at all crazy, if you have the space and can afford to do this than I say go for it. In the end I think you will love it. By the way do you leave your washer door closed when not in use lol?

I want to add that this expansion would be on the one car bay of a 3 car garage and even with addition a car would still fit in it although we use it for bikes, scooters, etc now.

And YES!!! We have to leave it closed and I hate it! The door can't stay ajar so it's always closed. Our washer smells horrible all the time. I gave up trying to keep it clean and fresh.

I (or rather, my boyfriend) often close the door of our front loader and leave it closed for a few days on end. Unless there's wet clothing in it, it has never smelled. At least one hot (sanitize or allergen) load per week, correct detergent usage, and not overdoing liquid FS will keep any smells at bay. We use mainly powder detergent, and that may help, but I think there are people on here who favor liquids that also don't have any smells.

I also am planning the same! anyone have before and after photos to share? anyone DIY their expansion of the laundry room into the garage? any tips or pitfalls to share?
