continued hydro 2016 pt 2

Figured I would start my new thread with instructions on converting a bay/dock/warehouse HID light to use in a grow op. Most HID lights used in a commercial setting are wired to 277/208v 3 phase but have the available taps to use in a single phase standard residential environment. These lights get removed/replaced quite regularly and are either thrown away or sold very cheap so its great to be frugal and pick one up to use for your indoor garden.

Might have found a deal of a lifetime but picked up 16 total lights for $100

To open the light assembly its only 2 screws and a hinge, once open there are screws holding the socket/reflector over them ballast. Remove them and set all pieces out to have access to the ballast

HID lights have 3 components as part of the ballast. An electromagnetic coil, capacitor, and igniter.

Coil pic here

the capacitor and igniter ( cap is the larger of the two)

Now locate the input wires and find the taps that are Labeled -COM- and whatever the light has been wired for. In my case the tap for 208v was used which is the HOT lead. In an AC system (residential wire) the leads are colored and as follows -black/hot-white/neutral-green/ground-

In the photo blue is used for common and the tap for the transformer labeled 208v is the HOT.

You will be reusing the green (ground) and COM (common) leads so just unscrew the wire nuts and remove the leads from the input wiring and pull out of the housing. The 208v tap you will not reuse so remove the wire nut, pull the input lead out of the housing and cap off the lead going to the ballast.

To relocate your bulb/hood is simple. the wires coming from the cap/ignitor and coil are already wire nut together and just need to be removed and extended. Each lead going to the bulb/hood has 2 wires that connect to each lead output that goes to the bulb. Your output lead from the ignitor and coil read LAMP and need to be connected to the black lead going to the bulb

COM has 2 leads coming from the ignitor/coil as well and need to be connected to the white.

Its really as simple as unscrewing wire nuts, extending wires and rescrewing wire nuts. The only semi complicated part is finding the 120 v lead that heads into the coil.

Its up to you to use an extension cord or just purchase 16/3 wire so ill go into a little detail on how to wire a plug end onto your wire.Iit is very simple and follows the same color code as before. Green is ground and is always the U shaped bottom lead. White is neutral and is labeled on most plug heads with a W but if not is primarly on the left side if looking at the plug with the U facing down. black is hot. Some plugs use different screw types to differ the leads which are copper/gold for hot, silver for common, green ground.

Well thats pretty much it. Any questions feel free to ask here or PM me. I prefer to have questions asked here so everyone can learn from it.

    Update

Lettuce is all perky and happy, will be fun to see how this goes (Light off for pics)

Not bad growth so far, the roots are starting to get established so the plants will follow as well.

Habaneros are still looking great. They keep dropping blossoms but I have hope they'll set soon. DTM is 90 days and these are only around 70 so im expecting soon. I did a res change On the far right one to see if a different nutrient will help them set.

Pink brandywines SS are getting big quick. I might be moving it under a 250w MH if its growth doesnt slow...mr atripey beside it is only a few inches behind.

Boston cucs are growing fast now too.

Funny cluster of about 10 cucs on the Paris plant. Still not one male flower or fruit setting on this one

Chammomile growing in soil looking great. Needs transplanted

Corn still in 20 oz container doing well.

    Kratky peas are happy.

Love the pics! Thanks for posting the info on the lighting system. The corn cracks me up. Look at this critter who has taken to the Kratky.

That's great baldhound, I always appreciate Bee s in the garden. I actually tried to freeze a few for indoors this year but my dog loves to eat them so they were short lived.

Sorry i look back at the instructions on rewiring a HID and i kind of wrote it from an electrition view, it could have been worded alot better. Its honestly alot more simple than it looks and can be done with very little effort. I plan on writing up an easy hood post for $8 so ill be sure to get that one correct.

Lettuce in your kratky pic? If so cull that container to one or 2 ASAP as you dont want dead roots/matter floating around in your media after they establish and need pulled because of space. Lettuce needs at least 4"x4" space to grow minimum per head, and thats super crowding.

Freeze bees? I didn't know that was possible. Have a ton of them and their kin here - the orange and grapefruit trees are forever buzzing. Too funny about your dogs eating them.

Your rewiring directions were a bit techno geeky, but still understandable. My brain hurt.

Thanks for the lettuce cull info. Wonder if Beebody is going get pissed if I take some of his salad bar stash?

How are your peas doing? The chamomile is a very nice looking plant! I don't think I have ever seen one before. I feel your pain about the cukes, my little gherkins finally have both sexes of flowers, but even hand pollinating them isn't setting fruit. Maybe I need to do it differently, or maybe it takes a while before the male flowers are fertile. Never grown them before, so I don't know.

Peas are doing great, chammomile turns out to be misslabeled and is an impatient flower variety (never took such care of flowers!) Lol

Mr stripey has been my favorite tomato of the last 10 yrs, low yielding but very good complex low acid flavors. Kind of tomato I can grab off the vine and devour like an apple. Tart, but sweet. Meaty yet enough juice. Complex but simple. Simple but soo colorful. Its been in my garden 8-10 years.

Sorry for the lack of updates as I have endevored on a new business partnership and am working around the clock till I get employees established. I'll be back on track in a few weeks. Only enough time to maintain garden and not update or baby lol.

Well, you got a pretty plant, even if it isn't the one you planned, lol. I might have to give Mr Stripey a try, it sounds really good! Hope all is going well with the business, I know life can get in the way of hobbies, lol! Look forward to seeing updates in a few weeks, glad all is well!

Had a quick minute to tend to houseplants and decided to take a few pics.

Corn still growing great in tiny containers in a soil type manual once a day flood.

Spider plant is growing jealous fast in hydro. My ol lady took it over and is now hers lol.

She manages most of the time but once a week I have to manage ferts and either trim or reposition. A 250 w MH will replace the floros when I get enough time to build a hood for it. I'll update hydro room tomorrow as I need to take a few hrs for myself (18+HR days for 2 weeks straight now)

Come on back, Chuck....we wanna see your veggies! :)

Here Here! I agree...I imagine chuck is busy with his plants...but we SO enjoy his posts and updates! Hope to see you again soon, Chuck! Some of my hydrop. experiments are working well, a couple kratky in bottle, the sponges seemed to dry ou tand i lost a couple herbs just getting started, and a couple flower seedlings. I guess that's part of the learning process, tho

I feel like a hobbit waiting for Gandalf to return.

Val I had the same issue with kratky in wine bottles. I think I should have waited until the plant had a bit more root length and wine bottles have a long narrow neck so the root has to go a long way to reach a substantial amount of water. But yeah, part of the learning experience. :-)

I'm trying to find people with babies so I can score some baby wipes containers. Lol.
