Hardwood Flooring How To????

We are planning on installing engineered hardwood floors (nail down) on our 1st floor. Foyer, family room, kitchen and dining room. The problem might be when "meeting" of the floor at the kitchen/family/foyer. Husband is concerned that we won't be able to exactly plan where the floor meets around knee wall so that all the flooring lines up. Photos attached.

You won't know until you get in there. Since everything in the pictures will be the new engineered floor you just need to figure it out when the time comes. It should actually be easier since it's all the same material and you're not dealing with carpet + vinyl + wood.

When you add your quarter-rounds after you've finished they should be white to match the baseboards not wood to match the floor. Paint them before you install them then touch up if needed.

Yes definitely white we prefer that. Just bought this house so working to make it more our own style. Thanks husband will not like the wait and see. He's a planner.

Are you removing the old hardwood? A professional flooring installer would do plenty of measurements. A full measurement (in inches) would be taken of all spaces (graph paper comes in handy). S/he would remember to SUBTRACT the 3/4" expansion gap at all the walls/horizontal surfaces. The final number will then be divided by the plank width. This gives you the number of "runs" in a room (rows of planks).

Once you know HOW MANY runs, you can then start playing around with things. A half width moved right or left might make all the difference...or will do nothing for the set up.

Getting your first and last runs RIGHT is going to help you finish the floor properly. Remember: walls are NEVER straight (which is why you need to measure each room "corner to corner" at each end of the room...this will tell you how "untrue" the walls really are). Remember to start with a chalk line = your TRUE straight edge...and work off the chalk line not the "wall".

If your husband is a "planner" then keep him busy with all of these measurements and documentation. It will come in handy later. Once the flooring arrives it has to sit on site for as much as 2 weeks...he'll have MORE than enough time to plan and think and scheme and measure and measure again...and forget everything he had measured...and do it again.

And planked floors are meant to be cut/trimmed where things pop out. It shouldn't be a problem. Professionals do it all the time.

Yes all flooring is coming out. Rooms are different sizes at the far end that is shown by about 5'. He will plan and measure but it seems like a ton of work to get it right. I just think it will better a all one floor type instead of tile in kitchen. Worth it in the end.
