not sure how some of these would do with afternoon shade, but you can always try and see how it works for you, experimenting is part of the fun of gardening :D

Arctic Fire Red Twig Dogwood is a pretty shrub that isn't an evergreen, but has red twigs in the winter, I want to try it sometime

Mountain Laurel flowers and tolerates shade

Another idea is to use different color evergreens or to plant flowering things in front of the evergreens, I like to mix my evergreens so I don't have a uniform looks, I really like golden evergreens (especially like golden arborvitaes)

A few thoughts. The Arctic fire red twig dogwood would work, but it won't show up well unless the house is a light color such as white. I have one and it's reddish but doesn't get as red as the pictures indicate, even though it's young. Are you in an area with primarily acidic soil or more alkaline? Mountain Laurel requires acidic soil. You might look into some viburnums. They flower, but they're not evergreen I have a variety of them growing on the north side of my house and they are pretty adaptable. for evergreen with no flowers, yews will get by in partial shade. in my experience, Arborvitae need more sun and won't do well on the north side.
