Rug selection for my dining room

last modified: 10 years ago

Hey all, starting a new thread as I am honing in on the style of rug I am considering for my dining room. I have decided that yes, I want to go with a rug. The room feels to cold and unwelcoming without one in my opinion. I will be replacing the current furniture at some point as well. What do we think about this rug? It is not the top of the line best of the best heirloom rug but is a happy medium that I think would be suitable and just fine for my needs. I am thinking of adding a coordinating "Greek Key hole" accent on the current curtains with a taupe/sea mist color. (Thank you for suggestion ZZmom40! Love it!)

FYI the rugs I posted from Overstock are not hand knotted or wool. Not sure what you are looking for regarding material and price but I'm just giving you style options.

My preference was for both but definitely not synthetic. I found a dining room with similar wallpaper to mine and the rug looks plain but the texture makes it work. What about something like this?

Not sure why I didn't suggest this before..you can go to any carpet store and pick a textured or pattern carpet and have it cut to the exact size you need and they will bind it for you. Very cost effective and very durable too! I am having one cut for my foyer because of the size and also for a client with a enormous family room and area rugs would cost way to much. I will post some examples.

Here a just a few I had from my local carpet store..they are really gorgeous and luxurious looking. It is worth a peek...and you can take home as many samples you want for free!! They can back it with a special backing for hardwood floors or they can cut you a pad.

Do you have a link for wallpaper or was it already there? I'm trying to find a stock image for moodboard

That image appears to be a natural sisal or jute type rug. Pottery Barn has a diamond weave one in Grey and Khaki. There are so many options with the natural fiber rugs. I was going to suggest one earlier one but I thought you were looking for something more elegant. It does work in the space. Can you send me a message so I can reply with some pictures.

the reviews on the one above says it appears to be a bit of a greyish blue

I do like that... I am unsure if I'd be happy with jute even though it looks nice in the picture I posted. Zzmom40 what if we did this pattern in the rug versus the curtain?

It's pretty but looks to beige or creamy...your room is white and gray...hard to tell from the picture. What did you think of these gorgeous carpets all come in a gray version.

The picture wouldn't upload from the store! I ended up not going with that one after all, we all agreed glass top wasn't best option. I am trying to take advantage of the Presidents Days sales! Here is a table, kind of casual but that doesn't bother me...I think the chairs will spruce up the look. I will be uploading some new finds in a new thread soon!

The table you posted is wonderful! Any thing on the same order would work great...and the finish can be black all the way to a soft brown stain a little lighter than the floor. I am telling you the upholstered chairs will knock your socks off they are gorgeous in person...and they are the thing that will really transform the room. The chrome accent handle on the back is absolutely fabulous....

Zzmom. We've been trying to locate more affordable similar chairs. Saw some on overstock but reviews are mixed regarding what the actual color is. Do you have any suggestions?

Pier one...these look very similar to the zgallery chairs.

Zebra??? What are you talking about???

    $9000 zebra ottomans!

Ugh, Oh, ZZmom is not onboard. LOL Smistry showed me a couple of really pretty studded zebra ottomons to possible go under the console! However, I am not sure they would fit given the bar underneath. I am not 100% sure about the console yet...I have to see how it comes together with lamps when they get here. I kind of like the idea of a grey or off whiteish buffet to contrast the dark table? I don't know, everyone has me worried my room is so metally! :)

SMistry!!!!! Is that how much they are! hahaha

Ok so we went a little zebra overboard earlier. But someone mentioned zebra above and it made me laugh!

I personally don't think there is anything overboard about our couch selection.

Oh you know...I'll just return it with my 100 rugs! Hey did a new thread go through for me- thought I posted but not seeing it

I have kind of similar Pier 1 chairs in my morning room, more plain though, just cream tufted without the studs or ring. Love them!

I personally don't know if there will be a cheaper immitation that looks nearly as good as the Zgallerie chairs, they are SO gorgeous!

    I don't see another thread.

    just added, thanks!

    Ok I am lost
You mentioned dark blue..dark blue what?
You have to get your furniture in there before you worry about anything else..one metal table and a gorgeous metal chandelier will not overpower your room that is just a little jewelry and layering in many different reflective surfaces is what will make the room cohesive...your room is not very big so worried about adding another wood or painted piece before you get the larger table and all the upholstered chairs in there...your worried...I am getting worried..zebra ottomans? Long day traveling...meeting a client in the am so night night ,'/
  • 10 years ago

Awwww hahahaha we didn't mean to worry you with the zebra ottomons ZZmom! I do think they are GORGEOUS though...better be for the price!!! LOL SOO.... I definitely agree to get everything in and then hone in on the other details... Here is a question...I am definitely getting 4 of the chairs... Should I do something diff on the ends? I relooked at the 12 dining room pics I saved and liked, and they ALL have white chairs all the way around! So i might not need an patterned or fabric chair but something diff in same color? I think it looks nice for a rectangular table...for round I like all the same!

I think the only thing you can do because the chairs have such a distinct design..is match them all...you could order the light gray same chair for at the ends..but I really think all the same even with the rectangle table is best. I think you mean you are ordering the zgallery chairs? Want to be sure when giving you advice..:)
Or do you mean the other chairs from pier one?

Thank you! Zgallery!! Sorry I should have specified!

This material is similar but major difference in price, plus they are 20% off. The nailheads look bronze so I don 't know if that is deal breaker? There are a number of fabric colors and finishes to choose from (faux leather and velvet) What do you think? http://www.pier1.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-pier1_us-Site/default/Product-Variation?pid=PV815-2&dwvar_PV815-2_variationColor=rainCrush&Quantity=1#ct-cross-sell2

Kelly889 did you make progress on this room?

Yes, it is a work in progress! I ordered a rug from Pottery Barn that I am waiting on, got a new sideboard from Joss & Main , and ordered new curtains today! I got a new table and chairs I also have an idea on some art work but yet to buy. I am going to post before and after pics when it is all said and done. I owe a lot of thanks to ZZmom40 for her advise and suggestions! Thank you for asking tomash!

Oh, and I also switched out the chandelier. :)
