Okay too much wood for me with mahogany cabinets and oak flooring and paint color IMO is the last choice you make so tell the contractor to hold his horses

Yes, if your contractor is reasonable, he will accommodate your request to hold off. My contractor just tried to push us on this because they said it was easier to get on a first coat so they don't have to be careful of cabinetry. I get that it is easier but people repaint walls all the time with everything in place. You have good reason to wait. My reason was that our bathroom is getting natural stone floors. I want to wait to see the exact color we end up with.

Also I have a house with tons of dark wood throughout. Lighter, mossy greens look great. So do lighter blues. A very creamy white would also look great. If you go too white it will look contrasty. If you lean towards Ivory / straw / yellow, it will help the eye transition from the wood and create a nice glow.
