This is the problem. I don't have a flat ceiling.

There isn't a single problem that good design and a generous budget cannot resolve.

You don't seem particularly invested in actually receiving help though. Or you would have a hired a designer already. Or posted a measured drawing of the space, whole home, and pictures as well.

I'm not sure what you mean by invested. We have worked with a designer and it wasn't working out. We've also worked with IKEA and gotten some great designs. I'm trying to post a photo but the app is not uploading it for some reason. Everyone says to take the soffits out but the problem is our angled ceiling. Thanks for your help.

Nils, we have tall, angled ceilings, no soffits, and cabinets that don't go all the way up. No problem. Hope you figure out how to post pics.

you may have Things in the soffits...hvac, plumbing..wiring....

so you'll need to have a finishing later put on top your cabinets, crown or no. that you'll need to clean a couple times a year.

Yes, some wiring in one I think. But I think they are mostly vacant.

looking at your last photo... and when you get new cabinets someday have them go up to the ceiling line on the left.

Remove the soffits if not necessary. Have the tops of the cabinets finished, either in the same material as the cabinets or painted the color of the walls. Keep the tops dusted since they'll be visible. Don't put anything on top of them in order to maintain your clean modern style.( Especially no fake green plants, although I know you'd never do that. )

Thanks, that is probably what we will end up doing. I just wanted to see if there was a way to ground them somehow. When the middle wall comes down it will be a big open room and I was just worried the cabinets would look like they are floating on a big wall. Maybe It's no big deal.

you might decide to eventually get new taller uppers, i think they might look more comfortable being higher.
