Since you have children, why not consider an elastic edge vinyl tablecloth. They are sold on line.

Thanks. I may just have to go up a size and fold it , it just gets all bunched up all the time. Any good sites or stores to find the elastic fitted ones? That's a good idea. I need to protect the wood right now but I love the idea of placemats in the future. If I got custom fabric cut at Joanns, problem is, could it fray at the ends?

Your tablecloth should have a minimum 6 inch drop on all sides. This protects not only t he table top, but the wood that supports it, especially from tiny fingers and what is on them. Since you are considering getting fabric from Joann's cut to measure (great idea), anything made of cloth will probably fray. Consider a plastic or plastic coated fabric. Nylon also does not fray. Ask the sales assistant for home fabrics that don't fray. Or, ask them at Joann's if they know of someone that can stitch the two sides of a fabric that frays. It's very simple with a sewing machine. (It can be don't by hand, but if you don't sew it will take forever and a day.

not after it goes through the washer and dryer once or twice.

its actually the perfect size right now although i understand you'd like it a little shorter than this. you could for the time being give it an overlap in the middle (i buy one large size of tablecloth.... and fold it in the middle to be any one of 3 sizes...you never notice the fold once the table is set.).

Last one is much better size and pattern.
