You could do something like that, it would be more like a rain screen application. Basically you would attach furring strips to the existing walls and attach the siding to those. Special attention and flashing would need to be paid at the corners, windows, and where it meets other materials. Seems pretty simple, I'd try scouring the internet for people that have already tried it.
