The only way to see the color is to take a large enough sample to your build site and look at it at different times of the day. The light will change the color depending on what's surrounding it and what time of day it is. Asking to see photographs online will not help you at all. Same with asking others because if they don't live in your area of the country, with your light and with your surroundings, the color can look totally different.

For example, say I had the color you're asking about. I live in sunny FL where the light has a reddish tinge to it so I might claim the color has a red/violet hue to it whereas you might be living in the mountains of CO surrounded by trees. The trees will throw off a greenish tint.

Even the colors you're putting next to it will change the color.

I am building a new home and I am using Hardie Aged Pewter with white PVC trim. I love the color. They just started on the garage so I do not have any pictures showing what it looks like on the house with stone, etc... but here is a picture as the sun was starting to do down. I think it looks darker in pics than in person, but I am really happy with the color choice.

For those who have used the prefinished hardie siding what are your thoughts? Our builder is trying to steer us to used primed and then paint. I think he is trying to do this in order to be less "careful" with the siding on the construction site. How hardy is hardie?

Stelmoqn, if you do a google search regarding the prefinished there has been problems in the past with it. Not sure about now. I know our builder only uses the primed for that reason.

We had prefinished hardie board in our previous house. Mountain Sage (the muted green color). We were only there for a few years, but no complaints. We had a few hail storms that caused damage around the neighborhood but didn't damage our house at all.

We're now in a VERY hail-prone area, and our builder advises against hardie board (he prefers LP SmartSide for our climate). I'm guessing that different materials are hardier in different climates.

We used Timber Bark Hardie siding on our home three and a half years ago. It still looks new.

I really like some of the new colors but when I requested a sample I was told those colors aren't available in my area. I'm not sure why. I didn't realize you could even get it primed. I'm in the design stage now so just thinking about my options. Are there downsides to the primed? What are the downsides to the pre finished? I guess I was thinking the color on pre finished would last longer. Does this type of siding need to be repainted like real wood?

I'd find out from the sub or gc who supplies the siding. Call them up and let them know you're looking to see the projects in person.

I called up the supply house and they where happy to provide several addresses to check out. In some cases the material was a pick up so they gave me the contractors contact info in this case.

Picking a house color off a small sample is really tough based on the different lighting. I'm also amazed how different a color will look based on the trim color.

Its nice to see a baseline though so its appreciated when folks post pics with the color names.

My top three right now are Night Gray, Slate Gray and Aged Pewter. Night Gray apparently is very popular as I have 5 local addresses to visit. Only 1 for Slate Gray. Going to wait on Aged Pewter until I rule out Night Gray.

Worst case I'll go custom through a finisher. Adds about 30% to the material cost though.

We had a different brand of fiber cement siding. Pre finished with 30 yr warranty. We repainted the house after ten yrs due to fading. They paid for a few gallons of paint ;-)

no advantage in doing pre finished as far as I'm concerned.

I believe It all depends on the warranty provided by the prefinisher and how likely you are to want to change the color of your home in the future.

I looked at a 2 year old model home painted with a dark SW Duration color. It was fading like no other. That particular builder highly suggested prefinished material for darker colors as he had that issue on multiple homes.

I too was thinking about the new greys after considering Monterey Taupe. We switched to Sandstone Beige, and love the warm look. However, when I was researching the greys, I emailed the company and they sent me several photos of homes with the grey I was considering. You might want to do the same.

Does the aged pewter look brown? We are wanting a medium to dark gray that does not look blue. Your first photo looks gray and the other looks beige! Any advice would be appreciated!

A house near mine used Aged Pewter and it does not look blue at all (although as cpartist suggests, there are many factors that influence the perception of color, particularly lighting! Mountain Sage, for instance, can look "muted green" on one side of a street and "very green" on the other). I would definitely classify aged pewter medium to dark gray. For my needs it was too light and too gray; looking for something that was darker and carried a green undertone, I went a different route. Best of luck!

We just had aged pewter installed in our new home in the last few weeks and we are really happy how it looks. There were no homes that I found locally with this color so we didn't get to preview it before it was installed except for a sample. Most of the time it does look a medium to dark gray with no hint of blue. In some lighting (I listed 2 pics of this) it has a tinge of brownish color. I swear by pre-finished Cobblestone. It's the third time I am using it on a renovation. When I started in 1990, it was only available on the West coast and I had it shipped to the NY area. It goes beautifully with beige or greige and with white trim. Limestone or sandstone Belgian block (Unilock) and facing if you want a stone look on your foundation and/or columns. Neighbors used a similar painted color and painted twice over the 13 years that my pre-finish was installed. I NEVER painted, except for the Azek trim. Word to the wise...the Azek gives you touch up paint to cover the nails...it turns dark grey and looks like speckles so you have to repaint that in a couple of years. Incidentally the JamesHardie folks honor their warranty. It is possible to have some damage to any painted product with heavy rainfall such as we have been having on the east coast, and when that happened on one side of my home that bore the brunt (two boards) they replaced the entire side...labor and material.

Our trim is Sherwin Williams 7008 Alabaster and the roof is Certainteed Weatherwood. We thought about the Moire black but decided it would emphasize the roof over the sides of the home, and we LOVE our stone. The Weatherwood takes on several different hues during the day, depending on the sunlight, which is fun. The Moire Black would have made a more imposing, formal first impression; we wanted something softer and friendlier.

Sandy and Dan, what roof color did you use? I love your homes and want to match the roof. We are also planning to use aged pewter.

Our Hardie board siding is Aged Pewter and we went with the "Moire Black" Certainteed roof shingle. We still need to paint the trim and we chose Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace for that. Inside of the front panels will be Benjamin Moore Smoke Embers. We get many many compliments about the color of the house.

Mine is dark brown which goes over a light tan stucco color (very similar to the color of the soil here). The roof is a medium brown.

Mid06 sorry for the late reply but we went with a dark charcoal gray for the roof.
