drywall surround for linear fireplace, mcm look

looking to purchase the mendota fullview linear gas fireplace in a new family room addition. i'm going toward a clean mid-century modern feel and love the look of the linear format, simple "grace" frame and no visable blower venting. the mendota catalog feautures this style on a solid wall (could be sheetrock, plaster, etc?), firebox about two feet off floor, absolutely no masonry/tile surround. just a fireplace in a wall. has anyone done or seen this type of installation? can this look be done to fire code? my mendota dealer kinda shook his head at the catalog images as he recommends the traditional x number of inches of non-flamable surround. i have contacted mendotahearth, but have yet to hear from them.
