placement/number/size of flush mounted ceiling lights in kitchen

I have a 12 foot long kitchen in NYC with low-ish ceilings and cabinets on 2 sides. I want to have 3 flush mounted ceiling fixtures installed, but am unsure of placement (how much room between fixtures) and then size of fixture.
Please advise ASAP! Many thanks! Andrea
