What do i do w/ this useless space? help!!

Here's how my "foyer? informal living room?" looks like....my husband and I just bought our house and i have no idea what to do w/ this empty space! Any ideas??

First I would use the side room as a library..I would fill one wall to the ceiling with shelves with cabinet bottoms. Fill the shelves with books and make some shelves taller for art objects. Beautiful simple drapery to the ceiling on the window(s)..a great rug and a pair of large stuffed chairs opposite the bookcase, angled into the room. Tables & lamp.

In the center..I would place in the arched area of the wall a large credenza type cabinet with a granite top to be used as a bar..maybe an entire wall unit. Places for wine bottles, large framed mirror in center. 2 loveseats facing each other with sofa tables behind them, with a large patterned rug between. Raise the chandelier and change out to something large and grand. If possible space add another chair (light weight) facing into the space. Walkway toward opposite side. And large colorful artwork everywhere.

Sitting/reading room in the alcove, major art gallery in the wall niches, skateboard ramps in the rest. OK, maybe no ramps, but you know the kids are gonna slide in their stocking feet.

Barbara Griffith really knows her stuff! This is a grand space meant for a grand home. I would place a large console table and oversized mirror on the arched wall side.

Oh I would kill for space like this!! I agree--an art gallery- LOVE it!! . I have just completed several pieces of art that would look awesome. I can just see a large piece on the wall!! Congratulations, this space is amaying i hope you will enjoi, this is where magination is a need, well i would play a little, for example colousr of walls i would change depence of your future furniture that would be your last concern, i would do plaster walls, for me this is to open space , and it would be sheme to not use it wright. Simply to separate this big space in to 2 or 3 room, for exemla one for dinning room and kitchen, other for living room, to make plaster shelves. Those ppl helpt me to renovate my flat , picture from 42 to 47 number is my apartment with white tv on wall , i hope i helpt

It's a very impressive area. I would say lots of artwork, a lovely big mirror and two formal chairs around the wall . I really like the table you have in the picture too.

i like barbara's ideas very much. if you go with a bar against the wall , have it on hidden castors . this way it can slide out from the wall for parties, allowing the bartender room to stand behind it for serving.
be sure to have easy access to the cabinet from the backside with a 2nd set of doors.

a baby grand piano with a loveseat and a few chairs would also work well in the side room for lavish parties or intimate gatherings.
