Buffet/Hutch

Hello! We have this buffet and hutch that we found in the neighborhood of a house that was being emptied. We wanted to use it for additional storage and as a bookcase. One of the sides of the hutch is missing the glass and I was thinking of replacing with French wire mesh. My question is should we strip it and re-stain or paint it? If paint, what color? It is in good shape. Besides the glass in one door, it's missing a small piece of veneer alongside the top of one drawer but otherwise it's in pretty good condition surprisingly. It has brass around bottom of legs and on bottom of buffet. Not sure of age or type of wood either. Any suggestions/advice you have is appreciated! Thank you!

Since it's not in perfect shape I would paint it, Google Annie Sloan chalk paint, very easy and DIY friendly...comes in many colors

I have found that wood furniture doesn't have to be in perfect shape. Flaws add character. You could sand it and try the Restor a Finish by Howard products. I've used it before and it's great. It saves a lot of work.
You could faux finish it, crackle paint, sponge, rag etc. I love the wire idea in place of the glass. That will 'rustic' it up. Nice piece. Good luck!!

I would clean it carefully first, then decide what to do. Test mineral spirits in an unobtrusive place first. The veneer can be matched at a local cabinet shop or online. Repairing missing veneer is a picky but rewarding process. The carefully matched patterns and well designed drawer patterns indicate that this is a quality piece. I agree with Christine Smith about Howard's Restore A Finish- it can be quick and easy if the finishes are compatible. The brass hardware can be shined up and re-lacquered.

I think the Amy Howard Chalk paint from ACE with one color on the exterior and a contrasting color on the inside would make a statement. Watch the video on YouTube and see how easy it is to create this effect.

I would not bother with the brass wire netting

If it is veneer do not attempt to strip , just clean , prime and paint.
