New dog!

Say hello to Shiloh, my new dog from a Canadian rescue. I got turned down from a local US rescue because I didn't have fenced yard .... with 20 acres, I have fenced pastures, but not a fenced yard.

I lost my beloved Lily (German shepherd/Australian shepherd mix) the first week of December. It was very quick & sudden (thank goodness for her), she had cancer and was gone in 3 days from the day she started having issues. She was 10.5 and I had adopted her from a rescue when she was 8 months old. She had a good life on the farm.

My other dog Rocky and I mourned ... and then someone on Facebook tagged me in a post about a smooth-coated collie that needed a home ... he looked like Rocky's brother. But they turned me down because I didn't have a fenced yard. I was angry, but then found Shiloh ... and things have a way of working out.

She is a great dog, very sweet, no issues except she eats too fast which we're working on. She and Rocky play and chase each other all over ... it took Rocky a little while to accept her, but she quickly won his heart.

She is supposedly a German shepherd/collie mix, 18 months old, 34 lbs. and needs some meat on her bones. She had a litter or puppies that the rescue adopted out. She makes me laugh!

Oh, those ears! I love them!

I'm so happy for you and hope your two pups bond for life.

Have you tried "slow" feed bowls? We use a Break-Fast for our lab mix (whose features are a lot like your Rocky).

Good for you! And good for Shiloh!

Don't be too harsh with the first Rescue Group, if you can find it in your heart. Establishing criterion for would-be adopters to meet is an imprecise science and there seems to be a tendency to err in the being rigid direction rather than tailoring requirements. It can be a thankless task.

I'm glad it has worked out for you.

mimi, that's exactly what I'm using ... I can now hear her chew some of her kibble, when I didn't use the slow bowl she just inhaled.

I agree Salti, I was really angry at first, but things worked out really well in the end.

Oh, how wonderful! I'm sorry for the loss of your beloved Lily, but you are honoring her so beautifully by making room in your heart for another. Shiloh looks like she's where she was meant to be, congrats!

Lily was a beautiful girl! I'm glad it was quick. You'll always remember her and the life you had together.

Shiloh will be a wonderful pet too. Obviously she didn't have any trouble making herself at home!

Thanks for sharing. We all love to see the photos of others' dogs and hear the stories.

Gosh...I just noticed how much Lily resembled my Aunt's old German Shepherd mix, "Smokey". He was the gentlest of doggies, and so handsome. Lily could be his twin! R.I.P., dear Lily.

So sorry for you loss. Rocky looks like a keeper!

I assume you are near the border. If you happen to be in SE MI, I have a slow feeder maze. I didn't end up using it for our puppy. I tried it a few times but our dog needed to eat more quickly so using a slow dish wasn't helpful.

Congratulations on your new addition!

I'm echoing Salti's sentiments regarding the first rescue group. I work with one and we do have safety standards. However, we work with the potential adopters to help them fix hazardous issues so they can keep their chosen dog. All groups differ in their approach- your negative experience was certainly a blessing in disguise!
