Help!!!!!!

I have always longed to have a Crepe Myrtle topiary in my home. The first one I bought a year ago sadly died of some sort of fungus. I treated it with something that was recommended at Lowe's, but it met its untimely death. I decided to splurge for another one this past Christmas. I sat it in its original contaner into a pretty pot. I thought that this would give it better drainage. Well, it looked beautiful and I checked it and watered it regularly when the soil started getting a bit dry. I thought all was well and even saw new growth. Then, I rotated the pot one day and the whole back of it was completely dried out and looked dead! I couldn't believe it. I have it located in my kitchen on a table top. It get lots of natural light in there. The side that died was facing away from the sun, but still should have had plenty of indirect light. I didn't have much choice, so I cut back half of the plant. Instead of a round ball, it now is half a circle! Was this the right thing to do? Should I cut it back all around and try regrowing the ball from scratch...or have I just killed another expensive topiary? Thanks for any advice out there!
