Looks like a great house! Congrats on your purchase. To my eye, it's a mishmash of traditional or rustic elements on a fundamentally contemporary home. If it were mine, I'd remove the traditional & rustic stuff and make it all contemporary.

Pros: Your house has good contemporary lines, that cool deck & railing, and even the posts look sleek & modern. I was just in Palm Springs looking at the midcentury modern homes there, and they used those simple metal posts for their structural needs. The posts fit the style.

Changes to consider:

1. Replace the 6-panel colonial entry door with a contemporary door

2. Remove the muntins/grids in the side windows by the entry door (I hope they're removable).

3. Remove the window shutters.

4. Replace the wavy siding (charming on a cottage, but your house isn't a cottage). Wide board & batten vertical siding is often found on midcentury modern homes, and I think it could look nice on yours too.

5. Remove the overgrown bush in front of the door, re-landscape with stone or pavers, lighting, & plants to make the entryway a focal point. You should put some money into this area for a distinctive modern landscaping job. Not only will it emphasize the entry, but will help ground the house too.

6. Paint: look on the internet for modern houses with color blocking. A color or paint consultant might give you the best advice, as it takes someone with a keen & subtle eye to pull off color blocking well. I think painting the brick will update the house a lot, combined with a coordinating color for the upper siding, and perhaps a third color for the deck (check with a keen-eyed consultant).

7. Contemporary style exterior lights, post lights, and house numbers.

Your house has lots of potential to be a modern gem. Best wishes for many happy years in it.

Remove the shrubs in front of the porch. Do not replace them. I would smooth it out and seed for lawn when spring comes. While it is not interfering with the entrance I would also remove the shrub near the corner that is hiding so much of the brick.

If you are up to it I also suggest painting the decking to match the new railing. I do not mean the surface you walk on. Just the part visible from street view.
