Kitchen size

I had my architect drawn some plans for a new house. My wife is concern about the kitchen size. She things it's not big enough to accommodate cabinets and appliances etc

The size is 20ft x 12ft with an island and two bay windows.

The dry panty is separate. That size is 7ft x 6ft.

Please help with advice on the size and kitchen layout.

Thanks

It looks like there is not a huge amount of upper cabinets, but there is a walk in pantry and also a butlers' pantry. So I think storage is ample.

The floor plan looks very workable.

this is a great size for a kitchen, very nice. as mentioned above, you also have overflow space of an nice sized pantry and a butler's pantry (and a kitchen "vestibule", what's that for?)

i suppose it comes down to how luxuriously you really live (ie: do you actually have a butler? if so, this may not be a huge kitchen in relation to the amount of wealth you may have), but for most normal people that live on the upper-middle part of the socio-economic spectrum, this would be a very ample kitchen.

It's a little deceptive because the square footage is really big but the wall space is broken up by a lot of doors and windows. However, with the island as extra counter, in addition to that long stretch at the bottom of the drawing, I think she'll find it ok. As others have said, one isn't used to thinking of all that space as not needing to house food (pantry) or serving ware (butler's pantry), so it's actually a ton of storage. Plus, two dishwashers! :)

it looks very nice. What are you doing with the kitchen vestibule?

How many people will be cooking and how many people will be being served?

I think this looks like a nice size kitchen but I might suggest removing the tall cabinet to the right of the sink to give a little more countertop and wall cabinets. You have rather large appliances going in but there is good space. I also think that the under counter frig might go better to the right of the prep sink so you would have better pot 'n pan storage by the cooktop. Often people with few wall cabinets will store their dishes in deep drawers with a peg system to keep them stabilized. With the additional food pantry and butler's pantry, I would think you would be fine for storage.

I suggest you see how many linear feet of countertop (worktop) space you have in your current kitchen. If this is the same or less, then it's not enough. The cabinet space does look minimal. Your butler's pantry is a great place to store better dishes and glasses. But for daily use, you'll want those things in kitchen cabinets. Also, you should have enough cabinets in the kitchen for baking utensils; small appliances; pots and pans; storage containers etc. It does look like you have a lot of wasted space in the kitchen vestibule and hallway right next to it. Maybe adding some cabinetry there to address her concerns?

Really, the only change I would recommend is as Rachel Savage Design Management recommended--shifting the island. 4' on the side of the island that is 5'8" would be sufficient, but the 3'3" is not sufficient for traffic on that side. Unless you plan on hiring catering staff, this looks like a large kitchen. Many moderate sized kitchens have around 60 square feet of counter and 1 dishwasher. It's wonderful that you're able to have a full size freezer in your kitchen and a butler pantry!!
