I'm getting all my materials together to start germinating seeds. My process is as follows:

1. I germinate with peat pots in a humidity dome and use a cheap electric blanket to provide heat.

2. Up pot using small bathroom cups and individually water

3. Up pot again to larger 4" pots and individual water

4. Harden off and then transplant into the garden.

Obviously my biggest labor with the system is up potting and watering.

This year I was thinking of going the route of soil blocks using ProMix as a media (which I've read compacts well and makes good blocks), but I have yet to find a good way to water the blocks easily (thought about capillary mats but then thought they'd make the blocks too wet).

I then saw this video of a poster using 3" net cups. The net cups are reusable and cheap (you can get 100 on Amazon for $25). The net cups have a benefit similar to soil blocks that they perform air pruning. The poster also point out that unlike with soli blocks, you don't need to compact the soil so roots have a easier time forming.

In terms of watering, placing the net cups in a large cage tray (similar to this) should make bottom watering very easy as I wouldn't need to individually water each container.

Anyone done this or have thoughts about this idea?
