You run the tile down to the countertop and seal that joint with proper caulking. Match it to the darkest color since dark colors recede. I never do the 4" backsplash anymore. Just don't need it and too many beautiful backsplashes. Only place it is sometimes desired by clients is in children's bathrooms because it is less expensive than nice backsplash materials.

only behind the sink where you will get constant splashing from the water. You could pick a really good paint and caulk the joint seam really well, but you will have to constantly wipe down that spot after using the sink. and what about behind the stove? you going to constantly clean off grease from the walls? That's going to take a toll on the paint if you use de-greaser type cleaners.
