Is the downroad optional? How far down does the entire fan hang?

I love this fan but have a very low ceiling in a small attic room.

You're in luck. The standard rod that it comes with is only 6 inches, so the fan height is just 15.15 from the ceiling to light kit. You can find more details here:

Hi Mere, Rhoda is correct - this fan includes a 6" downrod and hangs just over 15" from the ceiling. Since your ceiling is so low, you might also be interested in a hugger-style fan which sits closer to the ceiling: http://www.lampsplus.com/products/ceiling-fans/type_hugger-@-flush-mount/
