Waypoint Cabinets vs Ikea

Hi,

We are in the middle of a remodel and kitchen decisions are imminent. We had planned to go with Ikea cabinets and custom fronts from Scherrs, but I recently got a quote for Waypoint cabinets that is not much more and has its own advantages. I'm stumped. Any advice?

Ikea Pros:

Great reviews regarding the boxes

Love all the bells and whistles

Endless opportunity to customize Scherrs fronts (we were planning on an island with a dark almost blue/black stain)

Probably a few 1,000 cheaper, though I don't have an exact quote for assembly

Cons:
Have to find and pay for assembly (we have limited time window and won't be able to do it ourselves)

Have to measure and figure out layout myself

Waypoint Pros:

Looks to be a solid product (plywood construction) and comes with soft close, pull outs, etc.

Company seems to have a great reputation for customer service

Kitchen designer walks me through the process, takes responsibility for measuring and getting my order right, is available to help if there are problems, oversees delivery

Cabinets come assembled and delivered

Salespeople tell me the only difference between Waypoint and kraftmaid, etc., is that Waypoint offers limited choices. (I'm skeptical. :))

Cons:

May be a little more expensive (1-2K)

Not sure if the end result will look nicer than Ikea solution with custom doors

Limited color selections. We can do white shaker perimeter but are limited to basic stain options for island.

Another cabinet salesperson (whose estimate was 2x Waypoint) remarked that for the price, the cabinets could not be good quality.

Can't find much information regarding long-term reliability of construction and finish

Waypoint doesn't have that info on an internet site? Hmmm....

What cabinet sizes are available? It's possible the sizes are so limited that they can offer a lower price b/c there are so few options. Even IKEA has some limitations (e.g., base cabinets only come in the following sizes: 15", 18", 24", 30", 36" - no 21", 27", 33", or >36")

Regardless of which you go with, and right now I'm skeptical of Waypoint, I strongly recommend designing the Kitchen yourself - with help here, especially if you're in a hurry.

    .

Anyone out there know anything about Waypont cabinets first-hand?

buehl, Ikea also offers 12" cabs (base cab has pullout) as well as a 21" cab (no drawers).

Bells and whistles on Ikea cabinets are huge. Add more money to Waypoint even for after-market things. Plywood construction is not superior. Drawers are generally preferred to pull-outs, with some exceptions; again points to Ikea for drawers..

Thank you all so much for your insight. I really appreciate it. I definitely have fallen into a cabinet rabbit hole!

Today I went to a showroom and was directed toward the Dynasty semi-custom line from Omega. The salesperson thought she could do my design for 15-18K, and the quality looks great. My estimates right now are 10,500 for Waypoint, 7-9,000 for Ikea with Scherrs fronts, though I would also need to pay for assembly. We really can't spend a lot, but I'm also worried about trying to save a buck and then ending up with cabinets that look awful in a few years--or worse, Ikea cabinets that, after paying for assembly and finishing from Scherrs, actually cost almost as much.

Thanks again for taking the time to respond! Hope you all have a good day.

9K + assembly fees with IKEA vs 15K for Dynasty would be a run and jump on that as fast as you can no brainier. Dynasty is a superb quality cabinet line.

Pippabean...thanks for the info! When I was on the IKEA site a couple of weeks ago I didn't see those sizes. Do they also have 33" that I didn't see?

FYI...I have Omega Dynasty and I love my cabinets! They look like new 8 years later. The finish, hardware, etc., all look and work as well today as they did on Day 1. I fully expect them to last another 10 or more years! If I ever do another Kitchen, I will most likely use them again. BTW...when we ordered our cabinets, they came 4 weeks early - if you're in a hurry, maybe that would happen to you as well! (I had to scramble to pack up my Kitchen!)

buehl - nope, no 33" cabs.

Here is the catalog, scroll down to page 35 for a list of available sizes.

We redid our kitchen through Ikea five years ago. We bought everything through them, cabinets and all appliances. We were reassured by the 25 year warranty and the fact that their cabinet system was interchangeable and we could change the style of the doors without having to purchase an entire new cabinet.

Now the veneer on our cabinet doors is peeling. No worries, because 25 year warranty! Except, not so much. They sent out an "expert" to take pictures and based on her report informed us that they wouldn't replace the doors because the damage was caused by rubbing. This damage is not on a corner or an edge. It's at a seam in the doors and the lifting is in the same spot on all of the doors. AND, we can't even buy replacement doors because they don't make them anymore.

Bottom line: even if you had your receipt they would blow you off. Do a little Google search. They have a ONE STAR rating at the BBB. Story after story like mine. I'm so mad at myself for not seeing those stories before I spent $8,000 on my kitchen!

Can you afford the extra $5000 or $6000 for Omega/Dynasty.

If you can, I would definitely get the more expensive semi-custom line since you would have greater flexibility as well as more designs and I am assuming somewhat better quality.

I am also assuming that the KD for Omega would take much more of the onus of making sure there weren't any design errors in terms of clearances, fillers or whatever - and there are probably ways to maximize your size.

For me personally, having better cabinets; more options AND someone who is going to provide meaningful customer service is worth the $5000 or so. To me it's like any other economic decision - can I afford it and if so, is it worth it to me personally - better quality; more options and more "hand holding" (for lack of a better word for Dynasty KD versus DIY for IKEA) is a no brainer.

For me I am comfortable by now with my design decisions along with our cabinet contractor's, who has done a lot of Waypoint. The options were sufficient as well. It only comes down to sheer quality that this post is playing up my fear factor!

I know this is an old post so not sure if those posting will respond. A couple of you mentioned going with waypoint. Did you? If so how did it go?

We compared a few different lines and landed on waypoint bc I liked the door style for shaker the best. Finish is ok too and the price is more within our budget. The designers has been fabulous and I feel like lifetime warranty is good too. Just curious bc I’m too in this cabinet rabbit hole search. I have heard great things and reputable contractor companies in our area have used them.

Also interested in an update! We are between Waypoint and IKEA (possibly with Semihandmade doors?)

ackstroae and Ashley Baker - here is my original post, commenting on the Waypoint cabinetry. Please see my additional comments following this:

    cluscher30

We went with the Waypoint cabinets in our new construction. Overall, I'd have to say the quality is just okay. There are imperfections in several places, like little dents or bumps in the wood or the finish, and a few doors that had small gaps in the seams. My installer works for a local custom cabinet company but did our install on the side, and he was able to cover those gaps. One of the cabinet doors had a big separation in the seams; we requested a replacement which came quickly, but had gaps in the same seams! The next replacement was fine. I also received a wrong cabinet and they were great about replacing it quickly.

I did not find that the Home Depot cabinets were less expensive, which is why I went with the Waypoint. I knew I was looking for better, not best, quality cabinets, and the Waypoint seemed to be the less expensive of the cabinets in that price group. Since this was a new construction, I needed a lot of cabinets. I have a big kitchen and 3 bathrooms and the laundry room, so cost was definitely a factor.

I also looked at both lines that are offered by Costco. If you are looking a higher end cabinets, they might be something to consider.

    NEW COMMENTS:

I stand by much of what I wrote there. Waypoint are certainly not top of the line, but overall I am happy with them. I get a lot of compliments on them, for their style and the color (white and grey). I credit a lot of my satisfaction with my installer. My GC recommended a friend who works in a custom cabinetry shop, and he installed my cabinets evenings and weekends. He was definitely a perfectionist, and made sure that the fit and the finish was just right. I have both crown molding and lighting rails, so there was quite a bit of extra - both in terms of cost and install. For the glass display doors, we ordered doors with no centers, and I had the glass cut locally and the installer popped it in. Much less expensive, and no worries about glass breaking during shipment.

I considered IKEA, but i felt that they are really lower end cabinetry, and in my opinion, they look it. This is my forever home, so I wanted something I'd be happy with ... well, forever!

Had a full kitchen remodel in the fall, and an experienced local contractor steered me to Waypoint; I’m really sorry I didn’t do more research and less trusting. The drawers are way too shallow: something I didn’t notice in showroom. Several of the soft close mechanisms are not working right, and real frog tape took off the paint on my upper cabinet. The stain job on Cherry Slate bottom cabinets is poor on some doors.

My brother installed Ikea white glass front cabinets in his kitchen 10 years ago, and they are way better. So, either go with Ikea or spend a little more for a better quality...

Waypoint has many more colors, styles, sizes, and modifications available than IKEA. Their laminate wraps are well above the lower quality IKEA thermofoils and laminates as well. Their wood finishes and door styles are numerous and are a fair to good quality. Even so, there is a huge world of cabinets available above Waypoint that have better, and even stellar quality. All the way to heirloom fine furniture quality.

If you are happy with the quality of Ikea, you should be very happy with Waypoint, and be ecstatic at a true mid quality line which would be above Waypoint. Instead, as is shown in this thread, many people get unhappier at the higher price, even if it means an objectively better quality product is purchased. People weight the personal involvement that went into creating their IKEA spaces as creating value above the more expensive products that lack that personal involvement.

What series are those Waypoint shaker cabinets pictured above? 400, 600, 700? Thank you!!

What are some other brands that are one step above Waypoint in terms of quality and price? My contractor is suggesting Waypoint as well for a budged friendly choice.

Brooke Wilson - I think you are referring to my posted pictures. They are the 650 in Linen. The main difference in the look between the 400 series & the 600 is with the drawers. The 400 series has the flat face drawers.

Thank you for these comments! Also cluscher30 your kitchen looks wonderful! We were comparing to Wellborn, but in comparing the paint colors and the door shaker detail, I preferred the Waypoint and the price was so much better for our budget since we have a lot of other costs to the remodel to consider. I hope we won't be disappointed. I am so worried because even though the costs is not sky high, it is a lot of money and I want to love my kitchen and want it to last. We were considering the 410 (not as wide on door/drawer fronts on sides for more options for hardware) in painted linen as well. It helps to hear others, but I do get worried knowing they mid grade and not a high end cabinet. However we know we didn't want to spend double the price or more.

We are starting the process for a kitchen remodel. Our contractor got us in touch with a local waypoint cabinet guy. I just want to hear from people how their waypolint cabinets turned out. We have a limited budget. But if the quality isn’t that great I would rather wait than pour good money on bad cabinets. I Would really appreciate any advice and comments Thanks!

Our contractor is also advising us to use Waypoint. How are these cabinets holding up for all of you?

The waypoint cabinets have been in a year and holding up great! Especially with my 3 year old.

Thanks for all of this feedback- happy to have found this post even years after it's initial post. I just had the same dilemma, Ikea vs Waypoint which a local kitchen renovation shop recommended. However, another thing that I just discovered is that Costco (who I use for just about anything that they sell or anyone that they partner with and have never been disappointed) - has partnered with this company for custom kitchens.

Has anyone ever used Costco for their kitchen renovation?

I was looking at this cabinet line.

We did Waypoint, some doors we rejected and they sent us new ones. our drawers are deep. We love them. I think the fact we used a designer, Marc Coan Design, in Albuquerque, and their expert installer made it awesome. We did the crown molding ourselves, but the installer felt sorry for us and added a nail bar to make it easier.

Would be able to tell me how much you spent on your kitchen?

I used Waypoint. The contractor I chose worked consistently with a Waypoint dealer. My contractor was behind, so my cabinets were in the dealer's warehouse that was obviously not climate controlled. Panels shrunk, paint/stain was inconsistent. The Waypoint rep came out, sent me stain and paint, so I have to fix them myself. They replace two panels. I had a sink and vanity cabinet with a tilt out. The kitchen is factory installed and quiet. The vanity is an aftermarket slamming panel. I paid the same for both! I had to hire another contractor who found two warped doors. Waypoint has yet to replace them and my dealer is ignoring me. Good thing, because he (or my contractor) made a huge mistake. My dealer, who supposedly had decades of experience, talked me out of a farm sink cabinet. He said there just wasn't enough room. Yet, I am now looking at upper cabinets at the end of my kitchen that are three inches less in width than my lower cabinets. I thought they looked off. Once the countertop was installed, it was obvious. I am not sure who measured incorrectly, but the drawings show cabinets in alignment. It looks ridiculous, plus it's about 3 square feet of lost storage. My tile backsplash installer said either the cabinet designer had a hard time planning the right cabinets to fill the space and left it short, or it was a careless measuring mistake. The whole process has been expensive and stressful. And I still have two warped doors. And a few boxes had American Woodmark on the boxes. So, they say Waypoint is a step up, but they are really all the same cabinets.

We are 5 years into our Waypoint kitchen and the cabinets themselves (including the finish) have held up very well. Hinges on the sink base cabinet (Blum soft close) have a little surface rust, and I am replacing those. For the money, Waypoint is a great value with good quality for the price.

I just had a kitchen done with Waypoint (May 2022). I've used Ikea and the cheapety cheap stock cabinest from Lowes in the past but now I have more money, which was wasted. I cannot caution strongly enough against Waypoint. The quality of the cabinets was ABYSMAL. All kinds of scratches and one cabinet was so cracked it should never have been accepted (I have some issues with my contractor too, obviously). I had to plane some of the shelves myself because they didn't fit on the shelf pegs -- oh half of which were missing. Then look at where the shelf peg holes are in Waypoint --they do not go all the way up throughout so the bottom line is unless you retrofit and drill extra holes (which is impossible because I spent all afternoon and got one set done) you will not be able to reach the top shelf without a step stool unless you are at least 5'9." I'm 5'6" and the top shelf of my 36" cabinet installed the standard height above the counter is out of reach. The sides of the shelves aren't finished and give you splinters. Worse, the bottoms of the top cupboards are finished only on the front edge and you definitely see the stripes of play wood on the sides. Please please please do yourself a favor and go with Ikea. it's soooo much better in EVERY WAY. Even Lowes stock cabinets are better made (okay particle board but they are solid) than Waypoint

Wow. That sounds horrible! I didn’t have that experience luckily. Going on three years and I’m still are holding up well. I wonder if it’s just gone down hill.

We are out 23k for Waypoint Cabinets plus $5k for the installation for our small kitchen. They are falling apart already (and we have not even finishished installing them). Several are cracked and almost all have seams in the finish, unlike what we were shown at the show room. On some of them, the siding is pealing off already and we do not even have countertops installed yet. Drawers are missing the soft close feature due to lack of quality control (missing parts). Instead the drawers simply slam shut. The sliders are mounted by plastic parts that will likely break or fail right outside of warranty. I would have rather gone with Ikea at this point because they are more DIY friendly and then I could skip hiring a contractor too. BTW, waypoint warranty is worthless because you have to go through your retailer (contractor) to use it and we are not on good terms due being 15 months since the kitchen remodel started and having no ktichen for over a year now. This is a brand that will be offered by scammers since the company does not back their product directly. You will basically get no support from them for missing parts or defects or any problem you may have, and if your contractor won't complete the job, well they already have your money so they don't have to support the warranty and will tell you to kick rocks.

When you buy Waypoint you are basically getting scammed. Notice they have dropped from a 4 star company to a 3 star company in the past year.

You might as well just buy a China product instead and lower your expectations. Find another brand. ANY other brand. Well any non-American Woodmark brand (that is the parent company). American woodmark is the parent of so many companies I will never buy another one of their products again. I would certainly have spent more on better cabinets but I thought I was going to get decent quality, and some kind of warranty for the small fortune I spent. I was wrong and now I am stuck with no kitchen and broken / defective cabinets. Garbage product and garbage company.

There’s different lines which did you get? It’s frustrating you had that experience. In our area we have reputable companies who sell lines from here. And I got our kitchen done pre-pandemic so luckily didn’t pay the hefty prices today for anything material. But ours after few years still are great. I had two drawer face fronts that needed replaced and was easy fix and I worked through the company designer we went through to order. It was smooth process. Also they came out and helped adjust my drawers and brought me touch up kits if I needed them. So far I haven’t. Maybe we had a great experience having gone through the supplier/designer we did.

    last modified: 3 years ago

Ashley, I don't know, we can only speak from our experience and the way the companies current quality and service. We got Painted 410F Full Plywood. As for full plywood construction, this was also a lie. The backs are made from fiberboard, and not even MDF, some kind of strand board. The shelfs are also made from a low-quality strand board and many of ours have defects.

We also went through the supplier / showroom as that is the only way to purchase waypoint products with a warranty (Which is worthless in our case). We are going on 16 months without a kitchen now as the cabinets are still not fully installed / missing parts. Some of the drawers had only 1 soft close shock on one side, some other had none for 2 drawers and 1 drawer that has them. Total lack of quality control. That is what we get for buying an American made brand. As many doors show seams or poor paint coverage as doors that are correctly made. Installers cracked 3 or 4 of the cabinets or maybe it was shipping and so far, we do not have replacements after over a year. We cannot complete our kitchen and may be forced to sell our house at a huge financial loss as I'm tired of playing camping with plastic tables setup in the living room for a microwave and air fryer oven we purchased months in as it appears we may never have our problem resolved by waypoint.

These shady companies are the kind of installers / retailers Waypoint associates themselves with.

We are currently shopping for lawyers that might be able to help, us, but it appears it would be as expensive to sue them as it would be to take the $28000 loss on the cabinets. At this point I would rather the lawyer get paid than the waypoint retailer though.

I cannot even pay for / order any of the missing or damaged parts directly from waypoint as you must go through the installer who is not supporting us since he already has our money. So even after they refuse warranty, I cannot order replacement parts. This basically means that we need to tear out all the cabinets and start over with another brand.

American Woodmark is the parent company, and I will never purchase American Woodmark, Shenandoah, PCS, Timberlake, Waypoint, Allen+Roth, or Hampton bay products again.

Chinese Cabinets have better QC than Waypoint and are much much cheaper.

I should have just bought Ikea cabinets and installed them myself. At least I would have a working kitchen by now.

Stay away from Waypiont Cabinets and any retailer associated with this brand.

Neither one will meet expectations for a discriminating customer with enough funds to do something else. However, they will meet a budget customer’s budget. The budget customer just has to realize that they are not getting Crown Point quality here, if they can’t afford Crown Point. The lower quality equals the lower budget.

This is a super helpful thread. Any other suggestions on a mid-range cabinet company? I'm doing a mudroom and don't expect to need a lot of custom sizes or features. We plan to use a nicer company for our kitchen, but budget is tighter for the 6' x 10' mudroom.

My dealer was upfront and honest about wood naturally expanding and contracting. With everything I’ve read I’m doing Waypoint BUT their Duraform cabinet. Duraform uses foils and coatings bonded to composite wood material, highly resistant to warping, heat, humidity, and fading. This innovation process makes it extremely durable and easy to clean. Duraform finishes allow for the same styling and detail found in solid wood doors.

    Has anyone selected Waypoint Duraform?

STAY AWAY FROM WAYPOINT! Horrible company! My cabinets were sent damaged. Wrong sink cabinet sent. Cracked seams and peeling sides. Stay FAR AWAY FROM WAYPOINT! I will make sure no one buys Waypoint! #waypoint #horriblecompany
