Need Help Choosing Exterior Colors

last modified: 10 years ago

We have a dark red/black color brick around most of the house. There are 3 sections of vertical steel siding that are currently painted yellow. The front door is red and the garage door is white. We are purchasing a new garage door and would like to repaint the siding. Instead of getting a white garage door and painting it we would like to choose a color before we order. We are thinking maybe gray or black tones for the garage door & siding? The front door we could repaint a different red or maybe a dark blue/gray. The trim around the windows and soffit are all white vinyl, so I do not think we can paint. Eventually we would like to change the windows as well.

The last photo is our detached garage and would are planning to do matching colors for it as well. The entry door has been replaced with a new one since the photo.

We need lots of help as you can see and look forward to your input!

I agree painting your trim gray, but keep the windows white. It looks fresh. Consider painting your door a welcoming yellow, and add lots of colorful flowers to warm things up visually.

Hi, you have a nice looking house. There is something wrong with the portico, although I am not sure what. The gutter should be painted dark. I almost think what bothers me is the white ceiling. I am not sure why they put a ceiling on it - I think I prefer it when they are open. However,if it was painted another color it may feel like it is right on top of you...Perhaps the wide white trim around the portico needs to be painted the color of the house...The columns could use some work, but if you added wood to them, they would become quite large and bulky. Painting the yellow area will help the house. I think I would prefer a horizontal siding - rather than the vertical. I think I would add a piece of moulding or trim to the front door, add kick plates, and beef up the doorbell and light. Maybe you could move the gutter to the another side of the column and add lights to the columns. Then create a planter so that the whole leg of the column is not exposed.

Ok, so I found the description is not portico but porte cochere. After looking af different photos. Maybe its that the roof on the porte chochere and your house looks huge. Its really all I see. Maybe if you have a few tall, shapely trees (1 to the left of the front window and the right, then 2 in front of the porte chochere) it would break up the roof line. I do like the color of your front door! I would paint your house taupe.

Thank you so much for your input! Yes, I've thought the porte cochere was a bit overpowering since before we owned the house, but we live in small town where you can be choosy when it come to which house you want to buy. The inside of the house has lots of space and works really well for us. We have thought about adding more landscaping to the front yard and maybe adding a fountain, so that would help detract from the pillars and big roof. It's a great idea to paint the gutter, I hadn't thought of that. There is also a gutter on the left pillar that has fallen down. Another idea I had was to add big hanging planters between each pillar, but maybe a big potted bush would work as well.

Here are some pictures of what the rest of the front yard landscaping looks like. We thought of adding a fountain in the flowerbed to the right of the front door.

Here are some winter ones :)

Simply getting rid of the yellow will make a huge change. Paint those areas white. Keep everything else the same. I would not do anything tan, taupe, yellow, etc. Those colors do not work on your house. You have a beautiful setting!

You've received some good advice here. I think what your house needs is some landscaping that suits its style and personality. Something with big shrubs and trees. Your house's "look" is not mild-mannered and tucked close to the earth. The large port cochere dwarfs the low growing shrubs and landscaping along the house, and it needs to be balanced by at least one big tree and some large shrubs.
