Can shelled beans be brine-fermented?

I had beans last year that got ahead of me (bean tsunami!), so I let them mature and shelled'em. I believe that beans will expand ~2.5x in volume when soaked, so, in a quart jar I would put only 1 rounded cup of dry beans, plus spices, and add brine to fill the jar to ~95%. The rest of the process would be about the same as for string beans.

Has anyone tried anything like this? Is it a recipe for disaster? Due to rapid initial expansion, I think the beans would have to be stirred a little in the first few hours so that they don't get jam-packed in the jar and maybe (?) break the jar?
