Help- huge difference in floor levels

We just re-did our kitchen in our 1910 farmhouse. In bringing the kitchen to level, our contractor brought the entire floor to about 1 and 1/2 inch higher than the existing wood floor in the other rooms. We cannot fix this problem without ripping out the expensive tile and re-doing all cabinets.

What is the best (or least worst) solution. We have small children and this is the most high traffic area of our house (going from living to kitchen). We would like something elegant if possible!

The only thing I can think of is a ramp style transition that you would use for someone in a wheelchair and they are usually not pretty. But I've been out of the flooring business for a few years, so there may be something new out there. I would ask a flooring professional. Sometimes contractors just do a quick fix.

With that difference ho should have done this differently but IMO a small ramp will be safer than a little step get it in the same color as the wood floor.

Another possible solution to avoid a trip hazard is to cut the tile back the width of the door casing (frame) in the picture. Then have your professional build in a sloped wood transition similar to what was proposed above and stain it to be seen, but close to the wood flooring. This may seem like a lot, but it will give you the transition between levels, it will not require any major tile demo and it will eliminate any cross trip hazard. Cheers!

I had a similar issue in my 1892 Victorian home...tile floor in the addition that attached the house to the garage was lower than original wood floor in the kitchen. I had a wood reducer that was about 12" in the opening between the two areas. It took some getting used to, but worked fine.
