Bath mat washing complication

I washed a plastic bath mat

in my Little Giant. Would have preferred a hand-wash type program, but wanted to wash hotter than they allow, so I decided on Delicates, at 130F (my favorite temperature these days, when I can't decide between 120F and 140F). Mat came out intact and clean, though still yellow as seen above. But the drum and even the door didn't come out so well:

Scraping with a fingernail or rubbing with a rag didn't budge that stuff. An after-the-fact web search didn't find anything that would have warned me about this. To try to remove it, I filled the drum with rags and ran a long boil wash. Didn't make a difference. At this point I'm thinking "f___ me", but figure that the stuff won't come off on clothes, so at worse it's a cosmetic problem.

I thought for a moment of trying citric acid, and then figured I've been clever enough for one day. Emailed Miele Professional, and quickly got an answer suggesting their washer descaler and cleaner. Well, a while back I bought two boxes of Miele descaler like this:

whose only listed ingredient is citric acid. I used one box back then, ordered citric acid from Amazon, and kept this box. I asked Miele if this is the same product, and they answered (again quickly) that it is the same, and I should use it according to the instructions. So I dumped the whole half pound into the drum and ran another boil wash. Sweet relief, the machine came out clean.

So, was the deposit soap scum that came off the mat and attached itself firmly to the washing machine? This experience certainly shows the value of trying a mild acid cleaner like citric acid (if approved for your machine) if detergent doesn't help with a cleaning job.

Is that a rubber slip guard for in a bath tub? I'm on a phone so the pic is small. But that's what it looks like. Do the rubber bubbles have gel in them. I've seen them with gel but that wouldn't be it. Other thing is the rubber could have melted...if its got rubber or plastic I would tub soak unless its a fabric matt with non skid bottom than only wash and rinse on warm so the backing doesn't crack..I'm glad you got it out.

Larsi, I had a feeling it would hit home for you, so I'm glad I didn't have to post it as unresolved.

Mamapinky, I don't see how citric acid would have made rubber or plastic debris disappear completely. It could somehow have loosened it, but then I'd expect to find some flakes in the drum, since the holes are so small. The door boot contains nothing but clean water. Soap scum, on the other hand, could perhaps be washed away by citric acid.

@ suburbanmd.....Post hijack, but Little Giant related. I have my machine set to do 3 rinses, instead of the usual default of 2 rinses. I have Water Plus activated and have raised the water levels to the max mm.

Do you notice Rinse 3 is considerably higher than Rinse 1 and 2? Rinse 1 and 2 are very generous with water, but Rinse 3 is like crazy generous!!!

I was just grasping at straws.

I use citric acid to pre-rinse my dishes on the dishwasher (they come in stained with soap residue). I won't tell you why my dishes keep getting stained with soap residue (It's embarrassing)

Oh Diego..the suspense is killing me...please tell.

I have washed the bath tub mat for for 6 yrs every week & haven't had any problem with stuff in the Frigidaire's tub. Have used a blue & teal colored mats & the current mat is light blue; all fabric types with suction cups; I do change mats as I think the mat color is fading or "just for the heck of it". All the mats were purchased at Walmart as that seem to be the only place that carry non-white colored mats.

I wash the mat along with the shower liner & some microfiber cloths used for the "dusting" that I sometimes do (am not good at housekeeping) every Sunday. The wash temp is whatever the auto-temp is at the warm/code & "normal/casual". Only use detergent, currently tide with bleach.

Never had a problem with "left overs"; not even with the mats that say "don't machine wash".

I like you Mama, so I'll spill the horrible truth: Being the slob I am, I keep piling dirty dishes on my sink. Because I wash my hands a lot, the dirty dishes get contantly splashed with soapy water. By the time the dishes go into the dishwasher, most of them are a horrible cloudy mess. The only thing that helps with that is a little citric acid on the pre-rinse dispenser.

p.s.: Living alone, it's difficult to fill up even a half-size dish washer. I know that loading every single dish in the dishwasher before they reach the sink is not that hard, but the slob factor gets in the way.

Larsi, it's such a long walk to and from my Little Giant (from my upstairs office, 2 flights of stairs plus 50 horizontal strides each way i.e. half a Manhattan city block) that I don't observe it as consistently as I'd like. The Little Giant Cottons Universal video I posted on YouTube does conform to what you said. I believe that Automatic Load Control varies the rinse level depending on load size and perhaps other factors.

My Asko Pro Series washer was actually even more generous with rinse water, in rinses that were part of a wash program. Maybe that was to make up for the omission of some inter-rinse spins. On the other hand, the rinse-only program used very little water, tumbled for a very short time, and did only one rinse.

36vintage, if you've been washing a bath tub mat every week without problems, it can't be just luck. An old and deteriorated mat would be a bad bet, but you don't seem to have those. Washing every week, there isn't much time for soap scum to build up. My mat hadn't been washed since it was new, and that was, um, more than a week ago. I don't know if the 130F wash contributed to the stuff sticking instead of washing away. I don't think it's hot enough to decompose the mat itself.

I wash the mat every week along with the shower liner; took me a long time to find out & even at that, had read somewhere that the pink or black stripes that appear on the liner was MOLD. Then, when the apt maintenance was doing rechalking around the tub, one of them said, "soap smell"; the soap smell was what I had always felt was urine as that was what the odor seem to be; was never able to get rid of the odor completely as it would return. With that, I remembered that bar soap was made with FAT.......

Ever since then I used scrubbing bubbles spray around the tub walls & the tub itself every Sunday which seem to be a decent day to do it. No more urine odor-like smell & no more mold on the shower liner: I just spray, let it sit for 15-20 min, when I think of it or when the washing machine stops; then I just hose down the areas that was sprayed on as I had changed the shower head from a fixed to a hand-held for easier cleaning of the tub areas.

Diego...thank you for sharing your little problem LOL...slob issues LOL...but have you considered it takes much longer to load all these dirty dishes into the dishwasher once all your counters, and sink is loaded or you run out of dishes haha. Not to mention where fo you find the room to prepare meals..let me guess, you order out Haha. I'm joking with you..last time I was bed bound eith an exotic illness, hubs and the kids had to fend for themselves, one measly day and they ordered out, yet there were dishes piled on the counter, wet towels in the hamper, beds unmade, newspapers all over the livingroom, the diningroom tablecloth was crooked, and my feet stuck to the kitchen floor where some juice spilt...I almost had a nervous breakdown. But I've been in homes of people that suffer from this Slob disorder, and unless its reached preportations of down right filth, I felt comfortable, almost homey, but let there be a dirty dish on my counter and I am going into a panic attack.LOL
