Either could work, it's a personal preference; but have you considered the scale of the tile size? Make a mock paper pattern and set it on backsplash to get a visual on the whole space.

Those are too large for the application. I would look for a 2 x 6 tile.

Thank you everyone! I hadn't even thought about the application. The formula makes sense and when I layed it out on paper as per the recommendation above, I realized how hard it would be to tile. I will look for different sized tile.

Cancork Floor Inc. I was considering using a wall in a shower for a herringbone pattern, tile dimensions are 8"x20". Would that be very difficult for a tile installer to create a herringbone pattern with that, as 20 isn't evenly divided by 8? Thanks in advance... I'd hate for the tile guy to have to cut off 4" of every tile for that wall.

Tile that has rounded edges can be tricky when ends meet up that have been cut such as an inside corner. My experience .
