18x18 Will make it look more modern where as the 8x8 is more true to the original house.

I'd split the difference and look for 12 x 12 tiles. Sounds like you'd need to find another mfg for the tiles though. If you choose the larger tiles consider that they'll probably need to be cut to fit around the perimeter. Make sure you split the difference on all sides so it looks balanced.

Definitely lay them diagonally as pictures indicate.

Hi Sativa. You're exactly right, there used to be 8x8 linoleum tile there. The 18 looks nice in the open space but I am concerned that it looks strange in the narrow walkways. I am replacing it with this tile.

HI leelee. The issue is the stone only comes in 18x18. I can cut it into 4s to get close to 8", but to reach 12 I would have to thow away 6" per stone.

Are you trying to update the home? Does it have a "modern kitchen"? Or is everything original?

try to find a 12" tile instead, i found it worked really well for me. 8" will give an old timey kitchen look, not a wow checkerboard in the front hall look.

mine is 12". i would have done a 10" but not an 8.

I am updating the home but trying to maintain its character. Red oak floors, a traditional white kitchen, and I left the library with the wood paneling as is.

to me, that its more like a kitchen sized floor than a front hall sized square. but its up to you. i like this look a lot more as you have so much of it.

Other companies have black and white stone tiles either 12 x 12 or 13 x 13. Keep looking a little longer.

leelee - I feel like I have been everywhere and have not found a stone I like as much. The antiqued/brushed surface feels much nicer than the standard honed I have seen elsewhere. Do you know where I could find any other black & white brushed stone in those sizes?

What about a combination of the two-blending old and new?

Like an 18x18 in all the door ways and odd corners, and than 8x8 in a perfect rectangle in the long center of entrance, creating an area rug effect.

What do you end up going with? Would love to see a photo. I'm looking to replace my hardwood floor in my foyer with a checkerboard floor and having such a hard time finding/deciding on the appropriate marble. Nero Marquina seems to be the popular 'go to' for black but it may be to stark. There are some nice grays/blues but I also need to make sure it comes in 3/8" thickness. I love the antiqued look but know it can't look too old nor too modern. Any info/suggestions you have would be great! Would love to know which specific stones you ended up choosing. Thanks!

I am going to redo my kitchen floors. I really want to do the checkerboard floors but my kitchen is not very big and I am afraid that the floors could make it look smaller. I also don't want to make it look too busy. I am planning on a 12X12. Any suggestions please

I know I'm late to the party but the I love the smaller 8" x *8" the larger would be cool in neutrals not black and white. The larger tiles remind me of See's Candy shops - which is not a bad thing.
