The mid-tones of the wood (mushroom brown) would certainly work in this space. I would look at adding some stain to the railings...just to have it tie in.

I would work with a brown that matches the "mineral streaks" that are seen in some of the knots/planks. This is a nice way to incorporate more wood without having it ALL look gold/orange. Staining the banister the same colour (and the newel posts) while leaving the spindles natural will look very handsome.

Be aware that mid-tone brown may not play nicely with the gray on the walls. You may find you have paint as well.
